If I remember correctly, all I'd needed to do was port forward a particular port (which I think is adjustable in the config file so this step might already be done if you hosted other servers before) on the router, find my public ip, and make sure that one setting was on a large amount so that people didn't time out before they loaded in, and that the newgrfs/new game settings were what I'd wanted, or to load a save and tell people to not join before the save loaded. Also, run it as the dedicated server, not ingame server so that you can close ottd without accidentally the server.
Busy today but I'll take a look when I get back if theres still trouble.

In the future, we might want a slightly larger map. There was just barely room for three corporations until the mid 2000s, but now most of the map is flooded.

Probably people with money to burn removing land instead of adding it.

by the way, is there any way to set vehicles to replace themselves at the end of their service life? I don't quite want to manually replace all my vehicles and manuallygive them orders again, now that they are all 60 years old.

I think if you order vehicles inside the depot you can replace them with newer ones and still keep the current route?

maybe. but that still means doing an awful lot of recalling. I guess it is a bit less if I organize in groups, but I still want to not release them all at the same time . hm. on the last server there was an automatic replacement command, but it might have been a mod.

Most likely was a grf.
Also since the map is apparently flooded, are you guys still running that map or should we pick up a new one?

I think the automatically replace old vehicles option is still somewhere in the vanilla settings

This always comes up and it is indeed a vanilla feature. Accessed from depots you can set various vehicles to be replaced by a newer one the next time it is serviced.

Can autorenew even be set up by clients, or does it have to be set up by the host for everyone?

Look at your options ingame. Anything not greyed out is changeable on your end iirc.
