what's the reason behind that? sounds kinda weird that you would load the missiles directly into the turret instead of reloading the entire turret and then firing like normal

it's like running out of rounds in a pistol's clip and instead of reloading the clip chambering every next round manually

Maybe I was not clear enough :)

The analogue of pistol clip is just right. When you install a turret, it has some capacity for missiles in it. For this number of missiles interval between launches is short. But then you need to reload the whole turret from a storage (like inserting a new clip). This takes time. But then you once again can fire missiles one by one quickly.

  Is there a way to increase reloading time? Otherwise my few attempts at making a Missile [insert ship class here] are going to keep failing to fighters.

You mean decrease?

Reloading time can be changed in the equip.all file. Search there for "Nuclear missile", then search once again as the first occurrence will be for SmallShip class and you need, as far as I understand, BigShip and up classes. There you can change ReloadTime parameter. It is in "ticks". Usually there are 30 ticks per second, so default value of 250 for missile means a bit more than 8 seconds.

If you experiment with this, please post your impressions, mage it makes sense to have fast missile reloading standard for big ships.

Put in some technology for fast reloading, so if you want to build missile barrage ships you can, but at some additional cost? This gives me a random tech idea - warhead/bomb teleporters. So instead of launching missiles you'd just tport warheads directly at the enemy, bypassing point defence and shields. Would be shorter range than missiles though.

Possibly too strong... Maybe just teleport "somewhere around" the target, to avoid missile traps?
Or simpler have special torpedo technology that makes them moving in non-uniform way, more difficult to intercept.

Well, I imagined the tport thing to be a late game invention and/or have a drawback, such as putting your shields offline when it fires or something. Just something I always wondered about Star Trek; why won't they just transport nukes aboard enemy ships or something.

Fast reloaded should be a tech and ship component. Maybe  a weapon or equipment. If a weapon, an easy way to "balance" it would be to make fast reloading turret one size bigger. EG, small missile turret that was fast loading would require a medium hard point.

As for star trek the answer is two fold. Anti matter can't teleported, and shields prevents teleporting. Building materiel and structural integrity fields make any other ordinance less then anti matter inefficient. Anti personal bombs may be effective but trying to shoot the needle in the hay stacks that is moving at appreciable percentage of the speed of light.

  I'd suggest making them increase reloading by a really small amount -maybe even as low as 0.5 s- but be the same size as Missile Traps.

  It will force you to choose between the two rather then put up enough Missile Traps & Targeting Computers to make you nearly missile-proof.

  Although this may result in people switching to 'Wall Tactics'...

  You see, at one point I had every ship have a hanger bay and every single one was full of Fighters filled with as many Missile Traps as I could stuff in them- they could be used as a 'wall' or to distract the enemy. I've even used them to lure fighters away from my ships so they can destroy all other targets or pick the enemy fighters at a distance.

  I still equip my ships with Missile Traps, but if I could make Capital Ships Macross Massacre effectively at the cost of those Missile Traps I'd simply focus more on my 'Wall' of Fighters.

Currently there is a limit (set in Remember.cfg file) of 2048 ships (including fighters) for AI fleet.

Also, in the next release I'll switch on the "minimum damage" feature for active armour. This means if the damage of a single shot is less than this "minimum damage", damage will most probably not be taken.

So it will make big ships with active armour nearly invulnerable for fighters with small guns.
Yeah, that sounds great. And it was more then 50, the entire left hand side of the map was red. I might've tinkered with Ai fleet size but I don't remember doing that.

Maybe to increase not in a fixed amount of seconds, but in percentage instead? Like, adding one small "missile reload improver" (need to have a good name) makes reloading missiles 15-20% quicker. This is a really easy to add, so I can have it in the nearest update (only a matter of graphical assets).

BTW, that's why I want to make a "combat network" module that will allow ships to protect each other. In this case fighters will be able to use their missile traps to protect capital ships.

Fighters will become less effective against capital ships in the nearest release because of switching on the "active armour" feature.

'Rapid loader', or 'speed loader' would be good names for a piece of equipment like that, you might consider having it improve the RoF for ballistic weapons as well.  I haven't had the time available to check back in on the test game I was playing when I encountered the strange range issue, but I was using end-game tech on a Magellan cruiser hull, and was out-ranged with a gold-colored beam weapon mounted by another cruiser.

Thanks for naming suggestion, this is always difficult form me as for non native-speaker.
Improving RoF for other weapons than missiles make me nervous, as this breaks weapon balance. So need to think about it...

Gold-colored beam weapon is a "Photon accelerator", that has the longest range, but very low damage.

Can't do anything like this with any beam weapon except for Heavy Neitrino Accelerator - it's the deadliest weapon damage-wise . Are you sure your enemy ship was cruiser, not battlecruiser or battleship?

And what was your weapon? How it looked like?

Cruiser, definitely.  My cruiser never even got a chance to fire, but checking the design is no longer possible, I was using the 15A build, and that .exe is no longer functioning, even though I have 15A and 15D in separate folders with individual shortcuts.

15D should run saves from 15A just fine :)

You may copy Saves/ directory.

One explanation is maybe you installed a "gravy-gun" - it is more like an anti-fighter weapon with relatively short range but self-guided projectiles...
