Enough with the fisherdwarves already!

They just keep coming.  What do you do with your fisherdwarves?  Aren't they about as useless as possible?

I either draft them into the military or turn off fishing and make them haulers of some sort.

I give any fisherdwarf that dares to migrate the shittiest job possible: hauling refuse.

Surprisingly, I don't get many fisherdwarfs. Could be coincidence?

So are fisherdwarves essentially useless once you start getting the "there are no fish in the river/cave river/swamp" messages?

Teach them to butcher/cook/brew.  The kitchens always need help, and the farmers with growing skills are usually too crucial to spare on this stuff.

Also, you might want to give them custom job names so you will remember what they really do.

Technically... Fisherdwarves are far better then peasants, aren't they? The only difference between them is that the Fisherdwarves have a skill. Maybe they even get some strength or agility from it, but I doubt it.

They're just slightly more useful peasants!

I just let 'em fish and give them some other jobs for the heck of it. If they don't drown themselves and get good at something, then yay for them, I might start to care.

I don't really like fishing, but still Fisherdwarves CAN be useful when there's still food in the river. Problem is, when fish ends, you keep getting "there's no fish in the river"messages. Also, having to clean all these fishes and turtles is a nasty business...

I dont see a problem with them.  They provide a reasonable source of variety in the diet.

Hauling jobs turned on keep them from overfishing for the most part - if they ever get to the point where they can spam me with 'no more fish' messages, I make a couple farmers or recruits.  If they have another skill or even just hauling, you get a peasant with a bonus of a little fish.

Oh, so that "no fish" spam was important? I thought it meant they'd just move further along  the riverbank, try another swamp, etc. I just make them haul when they say "unhappy with the amount of work available recently."

I usually give a Fisherdwarf the additional task of Fish Cleaning and keep that job pretty much on permanant repeat in the fishery.

And I never keep more than 1 active at a time, the rest either get turned into brewers, millers, something else useful, or co-opted into the military.

I do the same with Trapeprs (after I've got a couple going) and jewellers too

Hey, I like my fisherdwarves. They help with food in the beginning and later supply my crafters with a nice steady supply of bone and shells. And while they're not exactly necessary to a fortress, in the mid to late game I'd much rather get them as migrants than, say, yet another miner when there's barely anything left to dig.

I just wish they didn't require quite so much micromanagement...at the very least it would be nice if the processing job would pop up automatically whenever raw fish was around instead of forcing me to constantly reset it after some dwarf cancels it.

When there's no fish in the river they'll go try the other river or a swamp, and at the very least they make good haulers until the fish come back. I never seem to have enough haulers.
