Cave Croc Ranch
« on: August 26, 2014, 01:35:12 am »

So I captured a wack of cave crocodiles during a goblin siege, trained up 4(2 male, 2 female), then caged and realeased them in a room with a couple of nest boxes. Neither have claimed a nest box though.

Why aren't they makin' babies?

Lock the room so the eggs don't get collected. Not sure if a pasture is required.

It's locked up for safety, as their going feral, and I even have a pasture. I really want an army of cave crocs...

I just tested with my only captured and tamed female cave croc. Built a nest box on her pasture. She immediatly went to it and laid 60 (!) eggs in it.
I doubt they'll hatch though, cause the wild male cave croc that was wandering a cavern has left. Perhaps she kept his spores on ice, who knows.

So you might just be unlucky, and only have non breeding females. Those seem very common in the new releases.

you say they're going feral? That means they're still semi-wild, not trained, right?
Not 100% sure if semi-wild animals will claim nestboxes.

what does it say after your crocodiles' names? (Semi-Wild) or (trained) / (-trained-)/(+trained+)/(*trained*)/etc ?

also. OMG 60 cave croc hatchlings. Soon my dwarves will all be dressed in croc leather. If they do give leather, that is.

Forbid the eggs, not the door, so the trainer can do his thing while they sit on the eggs, make their pastures training zones.

And since nobody mentioned that problem so far, are you sure these crocs never killed a dwarf? If they did, they will always be your enemy, no matter how well trained. Not sure if fighting is enough to trigger that enemy thing, or the killing blow is required. They might kill their hatchlings in that case, as those are considered to be on your side if they're a bit tame.

Well cave crocodiles lay a LOT of eggs, so I feel that if they do attempt to kill the babies it's pretty likely the babies will win.

Its a feature. Impregnating booze is a planned tech tree for dwarves and this is a sneak peek at it.

Wait.  Can you train invaders?  I don't know the new set of rules, but in 34.11 you couldn't expect them to even be trained.  Im not sure how successful getting them to breed would be based on my knowledge of breeding.  The babies would theoretically inherit the mother's level of training (hostile to you, in this case).

Nope, invaders will always revert back to being invaders. So the first generation (the 4 he captured) need to be offed the moment the first batch hatches else it will only give a lot of headaches.

The hatchlings on the other hand can be trained no problem, and since crocs drop a shitload of hatchlings your trainer will become a star in no time. Also kids will always stay fully tamed after once and never revert back after becoming adult, so be sure to train up those 60 odd crocs in the 3 years afterwards so you got a fully tame croc population.

I've never been able to get an invader egglayer to claim a nestbox. If you manage it, please report.

Is a cave croc the best animal to fight against enemies? Or is it a war trained lion/tiger? Is there even a "best"?

GCS or GDS, probably.

Cave crocs, jabberers, rutherers and (surprisingly) drunians can be quite good - drunians mostly because they are vicious and actively hunt down invaders and hostile wild animals even though they are not war-trainable. Beware though, they also hunt down dwarves before they are tamed.
