DF Forces PC Lockdown
« on: May 07, 2008, 04:53:00 pm »

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum. I'm sure it's a failing of mine and not the game's, though, so I didn't want to clutter up Bug Reports with irrelevant questions.

So yeah, I work Front Desk at a hotel and I have... copious amounts of free time in front of a computer. It's the ideal setup for lots and lots of Dwarf Fortress fun. The only trouble is that when I try and run DF on my work terminal (I have Administrator rights), it freezes the desktop. An attempt to Ctrl-Alt-Del to kill the process forces the PC into a reboot, which is the only fix for the problem.

I've tried the most recent release (38c) as a fresh install, both windowed and full screen, with and without the sound enabled. I've tried the release prior to that, as well as one of the older pre-packaged tileset installs. I've even tried copying my functional DF folder from my home machine to my work terminal. I've tried running in compatibility mode, with varying resolutions and color depths. All to no avail.

I'm only slightly frustrated at this point, but still very much want to play. Anyone have any ideas?

Specs follow -
Windows XP SP2
Intel Q965 Onboard Chipset
3.39 GHz
1 GB RAM

I've had no experience with onboard GPUs, however they tend to be pretty worthless from what I've heard.
That's the only thing I can think of.

They're not exactly ideal, but Bootfighter runs pretty well on low graphics on this machine, so it's at least functioning at a reasonable level. I've got the latest DirectX and diagnostics turns up nothing unusual (although I don't think DirectX is used by DF, but I'm trying whatever I can anyway.)

I have the same display card at work, and this PC regularly (80% of the time) doesn't allow DF to start up.

I blamed the card before, and now I know someone else is having problems I blame it even more.

Sorry, haven't managed to solve my problems yet though.

AFAIK intel onboard graphics solutions are notorious for not working with games.

I gotta agree with the rest, on board video has never given me anything BUT trouble, even for seemingly simple stuff.  Diagnostics will tell ya the processor is doing what it's supposed to, but the guys that built it don't usually understand what a GPU is supposed to do as well as the guys who make the dedicated freestanding cards.  So of course thier diag tells ya it's fine even when it won't run Diablo 1.  That was my personal crashtest with onboard GPUs  ;)

That's... so sad. The Intel Chipset GPU can't even display an ASCII game properly.

An ascii game that runs through DirectX.

Do you habitually run other programs at the same time as DF?

Just to be sure, the drivers for the video card are the latest version, yes?

If not, try updating them. Should be on Intel's website somewhere.

You can allow or stop your dwarves from eating these mushrooms, but it's entirely optional and doesn't turn Dwarf Fortress into Dwarf hookah-smoking pad.

For me, I have updated as best as I can to the latest drivers, and whether I try running DF without anything else going on, or indeed with something else going on, it rarely works.

Notably once it can get started I don't have the problems, its just the 8/10 forced shutdown and reboots trying to get it going that are annoying.

I have to physically do my contracted work instead, it's torture.
