Mutiple-tiles underground trees
« on: August 25, 2014, 07:08:41 pm »

Hi all!

Should I dig out several Z-floors to have the ability to grow the mutiple-tiles underground trees when caverns found? Is there any multiple-tiles underground trees at all?

Thanks in advance.

I've tried a couple of times. Once I was able to get 2 z-level trees to grow, but that was as deep as my tree-farming chamber was. In another fort I tried a 3-z chamber, but none of the saplings grew up after a couple of years. I know that there was a stone layer directly under the farm, which might have been the problem. I probably also had dug out a significant part of the area directly under the farm, which also might have been the issue.

I've been looking for a place where I have at least 4 layers of aquifer-free soil, so I can dig a 3 layer open space with a full layer of soil underneath it. I also want to try a multi-layer soil open space with a un-mined layer of rock directly below the bottom layer of the room to see if the roots will grow into un-mined rock or if they really need a layer of soil below them.

I also want to try on muddied rock with plenty of open space above and unmined rock below.

But yes, it is definitely possible to get multiple z-level trees to grow. I'm just not sure how high they'll get or how long it will take.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

I'm pretty sure that unmined rock below is an essential requirement to Tree Farming.  Whether filling back in with constructed walls or obsidian will work, I do not know.

Foolprooof way to penetrate aquifers of unlimited depth.  (Make sure to import at least 10 stones for mechanisms)
Toughen Dwarves by dropping stuff on them.  (Nothing too heavy though, and make sure to wear armor.)

Will they actually give more than 1 lumber yield? I've never recovered more than seemingly one log from an underground tree (compared to the plentiful bounty of outdoor trees) and I thought some of my cavern trees were 2-3z levels.

I think it depends on the tree. The mushroom trees(tower-cap, goblin-cap, etc) give one log but the fungiwoods give more, in my experience.

All of them will give multiple logs based on how big they are.  If you only seem to have found 1 log, check around the area and even on higher or lower z-levels, the logs themselves fall in a direction, not all in one big pile.  I keep getting logs falling into the underground lake nearby making them irretrievable, or at least difficult enough to obtain that it's not worth my time.

Though my sample is presently small (half-dozen), I have yet to see a goblin cap yield more than one log.

Bloodthorns, though .... they provide many.
