Prologue: Royal Endeavours
~~~
Hania is one of the biggest cities in the whole land of Rivesca, and it was common to see the square booming with excitement and trade exchanges. Indeed, as the capital of Tevakon, one of the oldest countries in Rivesca, it sees a lot of people passing through the city - mages headed for Slaria, merchants peddling their wares from Leda and Beles, refugees and mercenaries from Tara and Altharia and common workers alike.
And new to the city were seven particular mercenaries. While they had some moderate success in collecting their pay in various regions of Tevakon already, they had got the order to travel to the city of Hania on royal orders. After debating on whether they should answer for some time, the group eventually made their way there. And standing in the hall of the great Seton family, some may find themselves anxious. Servants and army guards were scattered everywhere, and for people who have to fight to get their pay, the luxury and lavish lifestyle was absolutely foreign.
If they didn't find that unnerving, they also had the towering figure of Frederick Seton, the ruler of Tevakon and their possible new employer to deal with. He was a tall man, standing over six feet tall, and being well built. Everyone in the land knew him as an excellent military commander through the old wars against Leda, which is still firmly remembered in the minds of Tevakons, some still wanting their revenge. The two nations held a shaky truce for now, but old feelings were still there.
"So. You were the group that was doing good work around the south?"
One of the mercenaries, Rayya Veriah, spoke up to him. Her voice was slightly nervous.
"Y-yes, your majesty. We got your letter... of course we hurried as best we could."
Frederick paced around the party for a while before asking for the servants and guards to leave.
"You could have made it quicker if you did leave at the earliest opportunity, you should have been here a few days ago," walking right up to Rayya, "but no matter. I may as well ask you for this. I need you to escort my son, Richard, to Altharia. Any other details are unimportant."
Rayya had to bite her lip in order to not respond to his first accusation.
"If it's as simple as that, then I don't think we would have any issue with it. The only thing I would ask is why not escort with the Tevakon army, your majesty. With no disrespect to us, it seems like quite a downgrade."
"Well, I can tell you this at least. Altharia is currently wrapped in a civil war. I want my son Richard to dissipate some of the hostilities there, but I cannot employ the army. We will have to be more discrete than that. A mercenary group will be perfect for this... and of course, you will be rewarded handsomely. I want you to show your skills before I can trust you, though. There is a cove of scoundrel bandits just to the northeast of Hania, near a village called Osea, who are supposedly planning a raid by our scout reports. What do you say? If you can quash this problem for our fine nation, and succesfully escort the prince to Altharia, you'll find yourself in a world of riches compared to what you're used to."
"I think it would be stupid to turn down, your majesty. For me, at least. What does everyone else think?"
Royce Sykes, Corin Randkin, Gailia Cosgrove, Irios Dias, Linfry Fiowe, Ariadna Reyes can now post.
Throughout the entire conversation between Frederick and Reyya, Irios did his best to keep a poker face. He was quite anxious, he was little more than nothing before Frederick, and the lavishness was starting to feel overwhelming to someone who had spent most of his time on the street. Once he was able to speak though he was much more at ease as speaking was what he did best, in his opinion.
"I think we can and should accept. It's an important task alright but that's just all the more motivation not to mess up."
Corin shrugged.
"Doesn't matter to me. The reward makes it seem worth it and it could help bolster our reputation afterwards."
Ariadna simply smiled.  Unlike some of the others in their little band, she did not seem at all disquieted by their surroundings, or by the royal personage speaking to them.  All she could hear was the clink of promised coin.  And a few whispered conversations amongst nearby servants, involving the usual rumors and gossip.  All she could see was herself with a large bag of gold in hand.  And the entrance of two guards as they replaced those near the main doors, one of whom she judged to be relatively green and stocky, the other a veteran enough to walk with a barely noticeable limp in his step which he would surely deny having if pressed.  All she could think of what she would do with the money when she had it.  And, of course, of who she knew that might be interested in what she learned in the process of acquiring it.
Some people would give a great deal to learn what Ariadna learned.  Some people would even pay in things far more valuable than gold.  Who was she to stop them?
"Good pay for a good cause?  Of course we should accept."
"I can only hope that fulfilling this task restores my honour. Of course, the pay's good as well, so I'd say that we don't have a reason to not accept this."
Standing upright, Linfry did all he could to not look like he was eyeing the luxuries around him with awe. It was indeed true then, according to his elders, that life in the south was more comfortable and prone to make people soft. Not that he wanted to test the statement.
"Any excuse to test my skills in combat and get paid sounds good to me."
I can think of few jobs better! We are helping you and your great nation; we will be bringing peace and safety to the people of Osea; we will be a part of an effort to avert a war that will do little good... We are grateful for you choosing us, and I hope we will be able to surpass all expectations!
Frederick grinned a little. He wasn't used to doing so and it ended up looking a little strange. He quickly returned to his normal stoic face.
"You certainly have a... colourful bunch, I would say. Enthusiastic, at the very least. I like that."
"Me? I'm not the leader or anything like that. We came together through mutual interests, so none of us have more power over the others."
"Hmm... certainly a lot different than Tevakon. Well, that sounded ubiquitous. I trust you have come prepared, at least."
"Of course, your majesty."
He made his way over to the group once more, making a gesture to follow him as he walked.
"Then I would like to see you get going immediately. Take something back as proof of the deed. After all, our garrisons may end up taking care of it before you. Osea is not even a days ride north-east, like I said. I'll tell you more details when you get back. Dismissed."
And without much else said, the man guided them back outside. They soon found themselves in the hustle and bustle of Hania's markets again, and now with an opportunity of the highest regard. They didn't stay for much longer. Soon they left the city, and were heading at a brisk pace to their destination. Rayya knew the geography of Tevakon fairly well, and so was able to lead them if they weren't capable - and honestly, they didn't require that much help anyway. They travelled over dusted roads for some time, and Rayya explained some of the reports that she got just before they left the Seton house.
"Bandits, huh? We already had enough trouble with them in the south, and now they're attacking Tevakon positions of power. How bold. Not like it'll matter, though."
"One of the scouts briefed me before we left - the bandit group that we're sent to take down can't have more than a dozen men, but their leader is noted for being proficient in raiding tactics. Keep an eye out."
Ariadna smiled at that, but said nothing.  "Keeping an eye out" was something she could do with ease.
Now that they were back on the road, which felt like a second home to Irios, he was his usual, overly confident and overall happy self.
"They can't be any worse than what we've already dealt with, I'm sure. We may not be the biggest or the strongest group but we haven't failed yet. More of the same won't change that."
Making sure to purchase some of the choicest raw steak from the market before departing, Linfry blew into an petite ivory horn in the shape of a winged reptile as soon as the group hit the road relatively far out of sight of the town. Not long later, a sleek scaly lizard heavy enough to weigh as much as two and a half full grown stallions swooped towards the group.
With a graceful show off-ish mid air somersault the wyvern landed by Linfry's side, kicking up a small slayer of sand while the varied contents in the sacks wrapped around its waist amazingly remained intact. The creature licked its chops and prodded Linfry with its snout and looked expectantly. Rosel could smell its meal, meager as they were.
Inspecting his wyvern's jaws and patting its cheek, the Ledanese grinned as he tossed the slabs of meat into the wyverns mouth one by one. He had purchased six of them and intended to feed Rosel slowly while walking. The wyvern had to learn to eat while on the move after all.
"No snacking while I was away, goooood boy. Here, have a steak."
Looking over the wyvern, Linfry noted the pieces of leather and metal in one of the sacks tied to it.
"Just a few more touches, maybe a day or three and we can start flying together."
Rayya thought it was a little too like their standard jobs, too. If it was just a matter of skill, a band of untrained bandits really shouldn't have much power behind them. These types always utilized the preying on the weak when it was convenient, but ran from any opportunity when they were at a disadvantage. Then again, there was only seven of them despite their potential.
"So I thought as well. Then again, it's pretty much the Tevakon army to get us to do their dirty work."
Rayya looked over to what Linfry was doing.
"Linfry, is that just your pet or is it actually useful? You've been keeping them around but I don't recall them ever coming in handy. Not that I mind what you spend your money on."
Linfry shot Rayya a baleful glare.
"Did you just call Rosel a pet?"
Sensing it's future rider's change in mood and the obvious acid in his tone, the wyvern slowed down and looked from Linfry to Rayya, its tongue flickering out and it loosened its muscles. Was there going to be a fight?
Narrowing his eyes, Linfry ran a hand through his fiery hair and folded his arms. The act reminded him he was far from Leda and these southrons knew very little about the culture up north...other than the fighting culture.
"When I complete my saddle, I and Rosel will soar to the skies. I expect you to no longer question our usefulness together."
Reaching out to the wyvern, Linfry stroked the underneath of its maw as he flung another slab of meat into its jaws for a satisfying crunch. All the while, he kept his gaze on Rayya.
"Sigh, but yes, Rosel's not much help in combat for now. It can hold its own but it's only trained to obey my combat orders while I ride it. For now, Rosel just carries stuff which is handy I suppose."
