Axe vs Long Sword V4.10
« on: August 24, 2014, 08:46:02 pm »

Most of the threads on on this subject are a few years old discussing older versions. So here I go.

I am going to make a human adventurer in 4.10

What are the pros and cons of each weapon type? What would you choose, and why?

PS - Don't say whips, I am just comparing these two.

I'd go for the sword, personally. The stab attack helps make the sword slightly more versatile.

Though the axe has a greater size, which helps by putting more weight behind each attack.

I am speaking in general, I have not made the character yet.

What are the pros and cons of the sword stab vs the slash? I know the stab can better penetrate, but what does the slash do?

I used to think the slash is for severing but recently discovered that the stab also severs quite well, possibly better. Could use some input on that one.

Slashing gives you an extra chance to have one of those attacks with the blue exclamation marks and it's better for severing large things.

Slashing is better for severing anything too large for a stab to. Stabbing will still remove parts, but anything with an area larger than the stab attack's contact area will not be likely to go sailing off in an arc.

For example, you can probably remove someone's arm, but you will not likely bisect a person.

Stab hands, feet, and upper bodies. The first two are severed more easily with a stab in my experience and the last can't be severed, so you want penetration.
Slash arms, legs, and lower bodies. A stab won't sever an arm or a leg, and slashing has a chance of bisection or at least spilling guts, which are always fun to lop off.

I should probably mention that I mostly play adventure mode to see how gruesomely I can mutilate my enemies rather than actually trying to become famous or something. Titans are just more notable than bandits.

Sword is more versatile, as stated. One big tip: slashing and/or stabbing the throat (different from the neck!!) is stupidly good if you get the chance. They bleed out quickly.

My personal love is for spears, but that's not what you asked :)

Personally I go between a sword and axe, sword and hammer, and sword and pick. Keep spears ready for throwing. Always keep a sword, for decapitating or cutting apart enemies. I find my axe hits generally get dodged or parried.
