Hm, just updated to 40.10 and suddenly I, too, have 56 magma crabs. I'll update if the population changes.

I had close to 100 before, once i updated they started to dwindle down to about 70, and then a megabeast came and started chomping on them now I have less than 20 :)

1) the magma crabs were already present, breeding, but not moving, in an unexplored part of the magma sea, and the update allowed them to move again, which caused them to enter explored territory and show up in the Units screen. I would have expected to see some baby mudcrabs though, not all adults.

I think this is quite likely. 0.40.10 fixed the bug that was keeping birds stuck in the air, and I think flying and swimming pathing uses roughly the same code for multi-z-level stuff, soo...

As for baby magma crabs, magma crabs don't have the [CHILD] token (unless you modded it in), so they're "adults" from birth.

Little buggers are at 90+ now and swarmed my lava forge. Which gave the melee squad some practice (though one dog caught fire and smoked up the place). I just walled it off. I have coal and infinite trees, heck with the crabs for now. I'll try to figure out how to weaponize them when I have the chance.

Edit - suddenly, they're gone. Wtf? Stealth magma-crabs?

I didn't have that bug before, but on a map started on 40.08 (I think) I ran into it.  Solution was to dig out the layer above the magma, *leaving the floor intact* (this is critical so they don't run all over the place).  Then arrange a cave-in from the level above that is wide enough to take out the entire cluster.  Goodbye!!!
