What would it do?: it would make a paralyzed dwarf breath when a dwarf performs CPR, which means if the dwarf does it long enough the syndrome will stop, (or spine will heal) also, a dwarf must have at least novice skill in it to do it. It basically means a dwarf will be winded instead of suffocating. Also, a dwarf can have surgery while having CPR

Skill gain, dwarves that like helping others may ask a dwarf that knows it to teach them when idle or on break. They can only get to lvl 2 this way, the other way is to perform it on a dwarf, the longer they do it the more xp they get. Also a dwarf can't teach another to a skill higher than its own

Accidents: the lower the skill they have a higher chance of accidentally slightly injure the dwarf they are performing on. Not fatal but can cause slight to heavy pain and bruising

Tiredness: when a dwarf performs CPR he will start getting tired, once he becomes over everted he must stop. Higher skill will make the dwarf tire slower, attributes such as endurance also help.

Why should this be added?: because when need a way to save urist mclegendary weaver from that giant cave spider!

It's not really suitable for the times. Nothing like CPR was recorded as medical treatment prior to the 19th century.

I agree with king, it don't feel like it really fits with the vague time-theme that we have.
also as I understand venom-related paralysis (in the real world) would CPR actually do anything in that case?

I am quite looking forward to the next 20 or 30 years or so of developmental madness

Yes the knowledge is anachronistic, but...

Yes absolutely. More so rescue breathing half of it than full CPR. If something stops your heart for any significant time, you're screwed in medieval times with no defibrillators, because even if they knew how, the physical trauma of doing chest pushes hundreds and hundreds of times would likely be fatal on its own.

But if something paralyzes your diaphragm but not your heart, you could be kept alive by rescue breathing probably for hours, quite possibly until a venom begins to wear off, making it a realistic life saving treatment for GCS bites for instance.

Bam! I went and looked it up, and found out that this is actually suggested as realistic for blue ringed octopus venom - it stops breathing for up to a few hours, but rescue breathing can actually save your life in the meantime. It suggests a single human would probably exhaust before then, but dwarves have more gumption =P (just think how long they go at those pumps!)

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.
