Mechanic's workshop not working.
« on: May 07, 2008, 03:14:00 pm »

I can't get my mechanic's workshop to work. I have a mechanic (proficent) and a steady supply of stone (flint). I don't have an anvil.

You're absolutely sure you have a mechanic?

You don't need an anvil.

And mechanic's workshops always have red names. Just like furnaces.

The only things I can think of:

* You've disabled the Mechanics labor on your mechanic
* There's no path from the stone you have to the workshop
* The stone is all forbidden or claimed for other tasks

None of those apply. Could it be because the mechanic is hauling stones all the time?

Well, sure, if the mechanic finds other things to do, then he won't go to the workshop. Workshop jobs don't have particularly high priorities, but they do tend to "grab" a dwarf once started (i.e. if you have a miner/mason and a mason's workshop set to make doors on repeat, then the dwarf'll keep mining until there's nothing left to mine, then he'll start making doors and you won't be able to tear him away with new mining tasks).

This is why I disable hauling labours on dwarves I want to be in workshops, and turn the minimum requirement to use the workshop to 'normal' to stop the dwarves who were turned into masons just to build a wall from spending all their time in the workshop while my Legendary mason twiddles his thumbs.
