Bullshit. Bombing cities to dust was part of the US doctrine in WW2. And not only the US. Burning cities to demoralize the enemy was also attempted by the Nazis. The US just had a new, better toy for doing so.

Bombing things to dust was pretty much SOP for everybody through WWII. This was before precision weapons were developed.

Kinda like building illegal settlements in occupied territories.

Nukes fired.

And so it begins. The great shitstorm of our time...

you can justify it however you want in your head, but the civilians that died weren't involved in any of those decisions, and no sane, moral country drops nuke. That's something dangerous, unstable countries do.

IIRC at least one of the two cities nuked inmin WW2 was believed by allied intelligence to be primarily a military settlement

ALSO, what about privately owned munitions plants, armored vehicle factories, etc.? Those are staffed by cililians and yet clearly a military target.

They had military bases but it was, afaik, known that they were largely civilian.

Would you really need to nuke just a factory? You can't just use regular bombs? I understand bombing things like munitions plants but nuking seems like overkill anyway.

It's not really ever necessary to nuke (or firebomb, would be another one of those things) anything.

You have to look at it in the lens of the time and the knowledge of the time. War makes people do desperate things, plus they didn't know the full scale of how horiffic the effects were.

If they had time to investigate the effects of the radiation, maybe, MAYBE they'd have a better base to make a moral judgement on.

I'm not trying to justify it, just trying to say that you have to look at it in the lens of the time.

You could excuse a lot of awful things like that though. Like the Japanese internment camps.

They knew the bomb was devastatingly powerful. They had some idea of exactly how horrific the results would be. No they didn't fully understand the radiation or fallout, (and exposed their troops to it during testing,) but the initial explosion they did test and saw clearly just how serious a weapon it was.

You nearly got out of the Bomb discussion, come on. It's not really current events, and what relevance it had to the topic has been left behind. I'd suggest starting a new thread, but a Historical Atrocities discussion is not going to end in anything but the thread being nuked (ha ha).

So, this happened.
Quote
BLADENBORO, N.C. (AP) — A prosecutor says the FBI is looking into the hanging death of a black North Carolina teen after his family questioned the official ruling that he killed himself.

Seventeen-year-old Lennon Lacy was found hanging by a dog leash and a belt from a swing set in a trailer park in August. The state medical examiner ruled it a suicide, based on reports from law enforcement and a county coroner. That coroner says he now questions if it was a suicide because of so many unanswered questions.

Bladen County District Attorney Jon David confirmed to The Associated Press on Friday that an FBI agent has been assigned the case.

The state chapter of the NAACP is organizing a march Saturday in Bladenboro.

Here's the first article about it I found, with much more detail. Note: This kid is 17, 200 pounds and works out all the time because he wants to be a professional football player. He was found hung in a public park with a belt around his neck. The police say it's a suicide, yet didn't even investigate anything before throwing the case away and saying it's unsolvable.

Quote
Then there were those facial marks on his body. Even the undertaker, FW Newton Jr, who has worked as a mortician for 26 years, was taken aback by what he saw.

Newton told the Guardian that when he received Lacy’s body two days after he died, he was struck by the abrasions he saw across both shoulders and down the insides of both arms. He also noted facial indentations over both cheeks, the chin and nose. Though police have told the Lacy family that ants were responsible for causing the marks, to Newton the state of the body reminded him of corpses he had embalmed where the deceased had been killed in a bar-room fight.

Quote
Lacy was found wearing a pair of size 10.5 white sneakers, with the laces removed, which no one in his family recognised. A few days before he died, he had bought himself a new pair of Jordans for the start of school year. They were grey with neon green soles, size 12, and have been missing ever since.

Quote
The family also wonders why the former husband of Michelle Bramhill and the father of her children, whom she left in February before relocating to Bladenboro, has yet to be interviewed by detectives. There is no evidence to implicate him in the circumstances surrounding Lacy’s death, but the family would still like to know why detectives have yet to speak to him.

Amongst other oddness, which leads me to believe the PD didn't investigate because they don't care, or even know the people who perpetrated it. Gee, NC, way to really shine.

That's NC not SC, but yeah, the deep south, not surprised here.

Also, authorities have ruled the rice death a homicide, so, that's a step in the right direction. I don't have time to grab a source link atm.

I find it a bit surprising to lynch a kid and cover it up in 2014. So yeah, it's notable especially since the FBI is now involved. There might be other cases along the years that were totally ignored.

We also learned that the examiner ruling it a homicide doesn't matter if the prosecutor is your friend. Unless the Rice killer has a special prosecutor, he will be exonerated.

The shoe detail is a strange one. I'm size 13 and there's no way I could fit my feet in 10.5s without damaging one of them. But why put somebody in wrong sized shoes when you kill them?
