I don't think you can justify rampant murder with "war is hell and civilians need to die too"

And at this point we can end on "the nature of war is that it's unjustified".

We got from American police actions to military atrocities? That seems weirdly appropriate :D

Not so weirdly, seeing how one of the hallmarks of post-9/11 America is the gradual merging of military and police.

Let us discuss exactly what you didn't mean about the space program in detail!

I think perhaps my views on acceptable behavior during wartime (which should only happen in special circumstances, that was one) should be to avoid civilian death and not do things that are so horrific in nature, literally no one uses them after that. And really, we tend to try to pretend we are a moral nation, but we are not.

I don't think you can justify rampant murder with "war is hell and civilians need to die too"
I'm not justifying anything. I'm saying that you are inconsistent in your condemnations.

Oh no, our troops don't go out half as decked out as riot cops have started to.

What else do you think I should condemn? I haven't gone through a list or anything. But I'm not a fan of war to begin with.

MSH, now I'm wondering: Would you consider yourself a pacifist?
I avoid the use of force when possible, but I do not identify as a pacifist. I would kill to protect myself or people I care about, but I see that situation as falling into total amorality. You cannot make moral choices when the alternative is destruction, and perpetuation of being is not morally charged because we're ultimately just a self-replicating matter arrangement. That said, this is what I say sitting in my room thinking about the situation philosophically. I am a very angry and vengeful person in general, so if I were ever put in a life and death situation I might walk different than I talk. (One of my more significant contentions is that I don't believe most people actually believe the things they say they do, at least not functionally.) As I said before, humans innately love the rush of violence. It's part of why I try hard to avoid it. Better men than me have found it too enticing to let go.

I think you should look more into things people don't care about, such as the aforementioned firebombing campaign. Hot-button incidents gather attention because they're dramatic, while the rest slip through the cracks and are forgotten.

Yeah, I think that's true of all or most people.  It feels uniquely good to get angry, whether to a level of spite or to violence.  It's seductive, but destroys rationality and the self.

Honestly, if the point was psychological, the Amero's could have nuked a purely military area, or even an empty field of some kind. Didn't HAVE to nuke a city.

Might not have had the same emotional effect, but if it went "field" and then "military base" along with wording to the effect "We'll keep ramping up until you surrender," I doubt it'd have taken much more...
They had very few bombs at the time...
The Japanese didn't know that.
