I was thinking more along the lines of Colin Powell. Y'know, back when people would have voted for him. Dude could have run in 2004 as either party or an independent and probably swept all 50 states.

Colin Powell is a good man and demands respect. He didn't even know about all the torture stuff Bush was having done. Memos found referenced how he would flip out if he found out.

I don't know if he would have run though, presidency doesn't seem like something he would take to, but that's just a guess.

But yea, I would personally be hard pressed not to vote for him depending on his opposition.

edit: also, with regard to previous mentions of libertarians, Rand Paul will have a tough time with the info released on his dad which he is also mentioned in a number of times with white nationalist groups. And, besides the libertarian movement having some interesting connections to racism in general, they also downplay the racial aspect of the whole thing, pretending that it's an everyone issue and not a race issue. That won't work.

Colin Powell is 77 though, so he's kind of old. Might work as a VP, but I really doubt it with the current  republicans.

Also, we should take this discussion into the US politics thread since its offtopic here.

Colin Powell would win without very much trouble. Heck, I'd come out of my apathy and actively campaign for him. Unfortunately, he's said that he doesn't want the job. Now, it's possible that he could be one of the drafted presidents, but I don't think the nation is in dire straights enough for it, and the republican party obviously can't support someone like him.

Two NYPD officers, gunned down in 'revenge' for Garner.

Is this acceptable for y'all? Is this the war on cops people wanted?

Next up, the inevitable revenge killings by the cops.

Nope. I'd much prefer a world in which presumably-unrelated police officers were not gunned down for the crimes of their coworkers (who don't deserve being gunned down either). Nobody involved deserved this, and it's objectively a Bad Thing.

I just wish police forces would actually respond in a way that might prevent this sort of shit from happening in the future. But I have no hope for anything but the opposite. It's just going to be more rampant tribalism and violence. Yay America

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Weird.  That NY Post article says his girlfriend survived, but the NY Times says he managed to kill her:
http://nypost.com/2014/12/20/2-nypd-cops-shot-execution-style-in-brooklyn/

The guy was a fugitive who shot his girlfriend "Saturday morning" (the same day, presumably?)  He was screwed anyway, and apparently decided to tie his suicide with Ferguson.  Why not... It's a huge discredit to the actual protesters, but why should that bother a doomed killer?  He gets 5 minutes of notoriety.

That's hardly a change from what they were already doing. I guess they could be doing it more enthusiastically?

*ahem*

No need to use all this talk about a "war on cops". Clearly this was a case where some man found the cops to be in hostile proximity and decided to act in self-defense. He was only acting upon his rights as a citizen of the united states. Those officers probably looked like demons, and thus required lethal force on his part. I bet they have thuggish militaristic looking pictures somewhere and were mean to black people in the past. It's probably justified and you're silly for caring about their deaths as if it were some kind of moral outrage.

Obviously it's not something wonderful, and if the guy shot his girlfriend it's not exactly a move to rebellion (and ultimately defense) so much as cheap move to distract from his actions. Doesn't mean people shouldn't seek to end a situation when they're the ones being murdered and ignored. Even if it means turning the tables and causing others to feel the suffering they blithely cause, the fear for oneself and loved ones being the next victim, the sorrow and rage at one's helplessness when they're taken... Ideally there would be a peaceful road, or at least as peaceful as it could be, but we cannot act as though this is the violence that cannot be tolerated if an injustice must be chosen. To abstain from these forces is impossible, and implicitly supports the dominant party whether they are the force against change from the requirement of violence or ultimately only act upon violence to end its cycle. The former's goal is itself violence, and that is something that I will always oppose.

Yeah until I see evidence that both of those cops had done nothing wrong in their entire lives I'm gonna assume that it was justified self-defence

Personally, the reason of the outrage I feel toward the deaths discussed here is that people DON'T deserve to be shot. Be it for race, petty crime or their job.
No, not desired nor acceptable.
