Let's not forget one of the biggest factors in why police use violence:  because it's their job.  However moral or immoral individual cops may be, it's their job to carry out state policy.

Policy like maintaining certain population quotas in the prisons and immigrant detention centers, like armed extortion as a major municipal funding source, like beating up activists as soon as the media looks elsewhere, like literally punishing cops for not stopping enough black people, like preparing areas for gentrification by snatching up anyone loitering and finishing the process through mass evictions, like hunting people who might be buying pot or writing graffiti through the streets with helicopters, like the mass deportations every winter once the agricultural season is over, like sending cops into schools to patrol around and taze kids who are disruptive in class, like arresting and sending CPS after people who leave their kids in the park unattended, like arresting en masse and eventually releasing into the poor parts of town any homeless who are seen by tourists and businessmen - generally policing poverty as a tool to maintain order after the withdrawal of all other social services.

Well, yeah... modern police as I understand sort of evolved out of the combined legacy of slave patrols and anti-labor mercenaries.

And also police forces, yes.

I mean, you're technically correct, because some of them in the north "policed" Native Americans.
You know, after stealing their land and slaughtering them for almost no reason.

Bullshit, not buying it for one second. First true American police force was started in Boston, 1830s. A free, Northern, Yankee state. Modeled after the London Metropolitan Police, a system created in a country that not only outlawed slavery but actively fought the slave-trade.

At least put some effort into research.

PS: "anti-labor mercenaries?" The modern city, and by extension the police force, came about in the 1830s. No labor unions back then. Slave catching was a privatized business, and native american removal was the military.

Live local coverage of Baton Rouge, though it seems to be "contained" now.

Near the 1-year anniversary of the Samuel DuBose shooting. The police officer Raymond Tensing accused of the shooting has been fired after bodycam evidence refuted his claims, and he is being tried for murder this October.

That's... good? Sorta'. I mean, someone died, so that's not good, and it's taken about a bloody year to actually get a trial up in this, but... still. Cop seeing actual trial at all and any repercussions beyond paid leave (if that) is unusual, in a good way.

'Course, the question now is if anything'll come of it besides the court fees :-\

Find out in another few years, I guess.

The Fraternal Order of Police has contested the firing of Raymond Tensing, but the decision has been postponed until after the trial.

I wonder if the choice to put Raymond Tensing on trial was affected by the fact that he was a officer of the University of Cincinnati Police Department?

Whatever facts Lady Justice gets could be filtered by interested parties.

More importantly, Lady Justice has a high preference to listening to people who know the nuances of the law.

Some blind billowy tart, standing in the court, swinging a sword around is no basis for a system of law!
