So, 3 runes… (did Slime for the 3rd as I think it's probably easier than Vault 5 for many characters these days.)

So, do I risk death going for the fourth rune in Vaults, or do I risk death in Zot? Tengu are fun to play, but very fragile, and the equipment I've found is probably the worst of any high level character I've played - no rElec and I don't even have rF+ other than from a ring.

Actually, I haven't done Elf 3 yet, but I was thinking of skipping it as the risk often outweighs the reward in my experience.

If it was me, I'd be inclined to take the win and walk just to collect the tourney points, but Orbs of Fire are nasty with only one pip of rF+. I'd give Elf:3 a try since it's basically Zot Lite; if you don't find any more rF+ or rElec there, then I'd start weighing the merits of clearing Crypt and/or doing Vaults 5.

I think any good player would probably realize that there's a significant risk and very little benefit to farming the abyss.

The abyss in its current state is pretty awful due to starcursed masses and I'd kindof rather just die instantly so I don't have to deal with it.

True story. It's generally inconsistent as well, since sometimes you mow through abominations and imps and waltz back out, and sometimes you constantly flee from Balrugs and the like only to find the way out covered with a perpetual cloud of mutagenic fog (thank goodness potions of cancellation exist now!)

The abyss terrifies me, I always MR up if possible facing abyss-sending monster types (even have them written down), I avoid it whenever possible at any level.  I've only gone there once willingly and that was on my very first dcss win (and it was a 15 rune!)

Have you done the first levels of the Vault ?
If you can handle the depths, you should be able to handle the first 4 levels of the vault, to get some more XP/loot.

Crawl name is Mindmaker. It's not a problem that I play on lantea, right?
Considering how the scoring works, it's best to start of with some easy combos and work your way down from there, I guess.
You are now a noble.
Neat. Thanks Chief.

@Distortion complaints:
If you see something with a glowing weapon you are weary. On the tiny chance it's an distortion weapon, which has like 4-5 possible effects, you have a 75-80% chance of not ending in the Abyss after being hit. After you know for sure it's a distortion weapon, you no longer have an excuse.

Also somebody fill me in on some scoring strategies in this tournament.
From the looks of it only the fewest people are going for extended.

Edit:
Any way to check if the team registration thingy worked?

Yes, but there's a very small chance that it'll happen to Abyss you on the first hit, in which case you're probably dead.

Well, you can always avoid all sources of it or kill them from afar, even if it's "unfun".

I'd rather get sent to the abyss once in a blue moon than ever think about non-guaranteed distortion generation.

It worked. If you open the clan page for the Nobles you'll find yourself listed (I've linked the clan names to their respective pages in the first post, so that's the easy way to see).

As for point strat... win? The tournaments designed well enough that how far you've made it in the game pretty much determines how many points you're gonna get, to the point that the only real strat to get lots of points is to win.

I am going to bring down the wrath of many and claim

1/ Not all unplanned trips to the Abyss are 100% avoidable 100% of the time.
2/ I hate the Abyss.

Ever since it got changed, I have only ever escaped with Ash followers, and not always then. Its just one long drawn out painful but certain death for me, no matter what my level. I guess I might get better with practice, but its the only part of the game I totally hate, so why would I want to practice going there? I hate the Abyss so much is it effectively stops me from entering Elf 3 completely, as I am no longer willing to take the Banishment risk. Screw Elf, and screw the Abyss.

Grr. Who mentioned the Abyss? Now I am all grumpy, and I just wanted to pop in and congratulate Dr L. F. Feelgood and Tegga.

/my Mennas slaying Lajataur resents deeply the fact that he has to tiptoe through one level of D due to the presence of Erolcha. Baa.

It worked : http://dobrazupa.org/tournament/0.15/clans/baronmunchausen.html
The earliest poitns are usually earned by killing uniques :)

Well, there are lots of bonus conditions and so on, so I wondered how every one was proceeding.
A lot of them sound gimmicky and like a pain in the ass, so is picking a different race/class combination each game good enough?

Yeah, done Vault 1-4 and all of Crypt. The choices left are Elf 3, Vault 5 or Zot 1. Or I could try the first couple of levels of a Ziggurat hoping for more loot. I don't think Pan lords can spawn before level 8, though other nasty things like Fiends and OOFs can.

I tend to just try and win, cycling through my top 4/5 combos, then worry about the banners later if I still have time.
Back when winning was a pipe dream, I would play random characters a lot to try and pick up lame 500 point top scores, but these days, knowing vainly believing I can win if I apply myself, get lucky, and stick to strong combos, I tend to just do my best to get 3 runes and get out. Serious business.

Mindmaker, if you play, you score points.

You can get poitns without winning, even without getting runes : killing uniques, entering the first and the last floor of a branch, killing ghosts, things like that are "easy" and and always boosts your team's score.

Oh. If you're really good you can mess around with the Nemelex Choice combos. Else I'd suggest to just not worry about it, pick the combo you're best at and/or want to play, and go for it. You'll pick up points as you go, but lots of splatted characters because you wasted a day trying a Nemelex Choice combo is going to be significantly less effective than snagging a rune or two (or more!) with your best combo.

(that said, if you want to try a Nemelex Choice combo, go for it. We're not here to stop fun.)

TL;DR: Go play and stop worrying. You're overthinking the tourney.
