Not exactly.
IIRC, Sif muna needs you to know a spell to follow her.
And this altar gives you a book with a spell anyone can learn and cast easily.

If you don't have ranged options and wouldn't mind casting, becoming a follower if Sif could be a good option (you know, if Sif was really good). You could also learn Shock and go for Vehumet when you find His altar, if you want to have better spells sooner, and effective passive abilities :-°

Why are you training spellcasting on a berserker?

Also, probably not much point training stealth if you are wearing heavy armour, or shields if you are using 2 handed weapons, or unarmed combat at all if you are fighting with weapons.

Got a holy claymore and enchanted it to +5, and found a +2 plate of rP+, enchanted that too to +4. Now on L3 and looking at labyrinth entrance. Dare I enter?

Edit: all or nothing!

Edit Edit: Useless junk there. Could have used that time better  >:(

I trained it on 2 of my first 3 melee (repel missles)

Sure, if you are worshipping a different god, learning some low level spells makes sense. Or maybe even while worshipping Trog if you are planning to abandon him soon, but on a mid level berserker it's a waste of XP that will also cause you to lose piety.

AFAIK, training any magical skill while worshipping Trog causes a relatively minor piety loss, but actually casting spells causes penance, which really isn't worth it.

I'm in. You can expect very few games played and Chei-like pacing.
What's your crawl username? I'll add you to the nobles.

Added.

Also, Sif Muna is pretty worthless unless maybe you're a mummy and can exploit the hungerless channeling. And even then, Vehumet is probably better, as you get mp from killing (which is easier to do with Veh) plus plenty of actually useful spells as opposed to Sif's schizophrenic gifts you can't memorise/cast/find a use for.

Maybe I'm just mad because my promising DESu splatted on D:13 after never receiving a single summoning spell from Sif. Out of like 8-10 gifts. Had to clear Lair and Orc with ice beasts from the starting book. I eventually found a book of Beasts on the floor and learned summon hydra, which was fun for about a hundred turns until I died to a storm dragon.

Whenever that happens my inner Trog screams "I HATE MAGIC" and I roll & splat ten minotaurs in ten minutes as a cathartic exercise. Casters just require so much investment and micromanagement for a character that will invariably be really squishy and weak when the mp runs out. Maybe I'm just playing them wrong.

Interesting that minotaurs currently have nearly twice as many wins as the next most popular species (gargoyle.)

Minotaurs are basically just as easy to play and don't tend to evaporate at the slightest hint of elemental damage [srsly gargoyle health is so damn low].

Also Tegga you magnificent person keep doing the lord's work for the Champions!

https://loom.shalott.org/learndb.html#hyperelliptic is apparently a pretty good guide most of the time.
It's the reponse I get when I ask "where should I go next" in ##crawl, anyway :P
