Stuck dwarf
« on: August 22, 2014, 08:39:10 pm »

I have a dwarf that has wandered off the reservation.  He's now several levels up from my entrance and will not move.  I've assigned jobs.  Used DTherapist to remove his designation and then back.  He's dying of hunger and I have food.  But he won't come back into the fort.

Any suggestions?

Clarify: He is outside.
Also: I've saved and reloaded.

No, they went to Hel, where they lead a bleak existence in cold and darkness. Valhalla is reserved for valiant warriors.

Found another post suggesting to create a squad and "move" to that location.  I tried and it said "unreachable location".

Begging the question how did Chuck Darwin's favorite dwarf ever get to that spot to begin with.

Anyway, had to tunnel under a river to give him a path home.

Definitely a front line type and not leadership material.

Sounds like he forded across the river when the water level happened to be low.  What were his assigned duties before?

I had nothing going on across the river.  He was my architect and mechanic.

Sounds like a climbing accident, he might have been scared by a butterfly or something and jumped/climbed up there besides no normal path. Above your entrance sounds like you could maybe set a miner to work to make a shaft of updown stairs that you later seal with a wall once he's inside.

If other dwarves can path there make him a temporary food stockpile and have dinner delivered, set it to take from the main one.

As to why, dwarves occassionally wander in their free time, some more than others but it always happened. A meeting zone somewhere seems to help prevent most of it.

Have you checked his wounds? The last time I had something similar (military dwarf complaining about 'no reachable targets'), it turned out he had a case of broken neck and fractured spine. Perhaps he sustained some small injury to keep him from climbing back.

Only thing it said outside each body part was "Hungry".

Are your dwarves indians? :P

seriously, him being an architect maybe he was building/destroying a bridge over the river and got stuck on the wrong side?
or as previously explained, check your river, the spot where he was stuck, go up a few z-levels to see the tree line, most likely he got scared by wildlife, climbed up a tree on the fort bank of the river, pathed through the branches connecting or jumping to the branches of another tree on the opposite bank of the river and climbed down in the wrong side and got stuck.

Yeah, I guess something like that.  I ended up digging a path under the river that gave him access back to the fortress side of the water.

Or the river may have turned to ice? Why he wandered over there after the river solidified is anyone's guess. Possibly went to grab something a migrant or caravan dropped at the map edge or might have been scrounging for bugs... who knows.  :P

Mister Adams,
How many licks does it take to get to the [candy] center of a Dwarf Fortress?
