Why do i need DFHack to display the gender of my animals?
« on: August 22, 2014, 05:10:49 pm »

Hey,

i'm a bit wondering why there is no option for pastures in vanilla to display the gender of animals?  :o
At least for me its pretty important to know, if i am moving a male or female animal from one pasture to another e.g. for breeding purposes. And i cant imagine myself that this would be hard to implement since DFHack makes it already possible.

you can see the gender by moving over them with "k" and looking at the description. "He/She is gigantic"

and I don't think you need to pasture different gendered animals together in order for them to breed but I'm not sure

He wants female animals in specific pastures so they have babies in those pastures and don't cause starvation by overpopulation,  I think.

And knowing 'that llama is female' is not sufficient to tell you which llama in the pasture list is that llama, and therefore female.

This is something which I totally support. All animals should have a gender listed beside their name in every context in which their name appears,  since it can sometimes be important information to know and many animals do not have different names for male/female like duck/drake.

Isn't there that little symbol that's like male or female next to the animal name? Like right on the name? ♂(male) and ♀(female)?

When I am selecting animals for pasture.caging.piting, etc I cannot see their sex.  I do wish that was changed, as for now I guess and try to memorize their place in the list of ll the animals.

An alternative is to edit the raws for all the domestic animals so that they have different names for males and females.  This has gotten harder as the versions have progressed.  It's also a pain when the versions are changing rapidly, as they are right now.

So many species share unique male and female names.

Another option is to just put 'm' or 'f' in their name 'm-dog', 'm dog', 'dog (m)' etc.

THIS I was wondering if there was a caste adjective tag like there is in some of the plant local materials.. I have not found any evidence other than the pattern is similar to the way Toady has seemed to code other things :-\.

Maybe a member of the Continuum will hear our plea for wisdom :o

Check the definition for sheep, in creature_domestic.  Both rams and ewes have caste-specific names.  That is the pattern I used.

Ok well then this is an interface suggestion. Interface needs a gigantic overhaul to a point where the Therapist won't be necessary. Animal genders is the least of it...
