Uther shall move post haste to fight side by side with William. He'll commission a memorial slab for Ari to be displayed in his tower as it finishes, none of his guards shall ever be forgotten.

Honestly was sort of expecting it. After a period of grief he'll see into getting a replacement but for now the battle is what is important, and surviving it.

William continued dodging and deflecting blows from the drow aimed at him as he fought, but it was quickly becoming one-sided. He knew, almost instictively, that if he did not press the attack he would quickly tire. And then an arrow whistled by him, like a screaming bullet taking one of the drow in an arm. The precise fletching and mithril shaft could only be of elven make, and the arrow itself sang, a song of seeking and death. It was not long before he was joined by others. An tall lanky spear elf with a mithril weapon, and three, um... three, wow. He was having a hard time thinking clearly, blood was rushing to his face and other extremities as the three lovely succubi warriors came to fight alongside him. It was easy to overlook the non-human side, what did he care if they had red skin and other odd features. Such women made him feel ferocious in battle. Uther too joined him, orichalum battle-axe in hand and ready to cleave foes.

With such formidable allies the drow ambush quickly turned into a rout as those that weren't able to flee rapidly enough were cut down. The remaining drow fled to the south, pursued by the city defenders. A frozen glob of spittle crackled by Williams head and his sight snapped up from his quarry. Now he knew what the shouting earlier had been about. A massive lizard-like beast stood to the south, a single eye in it's head, red-tinged scales, that deepened to carmine near the edges, and with two short stubby tails, likely lost in a previous battle and possibly not yet regrown as some lizards do. This was Xob, a hill titan, and it looked hungry.

The beast charged, hocking up several pieces of frozen spittle and sending them projectile like at the combat group. One of the chunks flew past and struck Imeka in the thigh, spinning him through the air and knocking him down.

Several more pieces flew as they charged, and William even deflected one off his shield. The elf was first to arrive and charged under the beast stabbing it in the rear foot and impaling it with his spear. The succubi were no less effective, landing blows to legs and feet, red scales taking on a darker hue. Uther and William too did their part, scoring a pair of hits on torso and lower body, sharp weapons cutting through scale and flesh. The beast reared, in pain and anger at the sudden affront. It lacked significant weapons though, despite it's size. Spitting more globs seemed ineffective, the projectiles damaging armor but doing little damage to the creatures beneath.

Suddenly the elf was in front of it again and it reared up, trying to come down upon the creature. The elf's mithril spear pierced the creature in the head, impaling it and the elf held on as it tried to shake him off. The succubi launched new attacks and the nearly immobilized foe, breaking legs, cutting into the crimson. Red was everywhere.

It was William who dealt the killing blow, coming up in a slash from beneath it caught the beast in the abdomen, severing the lower torso cleanly and sending the spasming chunks falling to the ground.

For a second the fighters all stood there, breathing heavily. Uther stared unabashedly at the heaving chests of his female compatriots. One of the succubi picked up a fallen scale and non-chalantly said:"Pity, it was a very delectable shade of red. Perhaps I shall have an amulet made from this scale."

As they returned to the city another of the red-skinned warriors sidled up to William, whispering in his ear:"You fight well, perhaps if there is time later you can show me some of your ... techniques."

She laughed lightly as they caravan guards returned to their ordinarily dull posts, fresh gleams in their eyes.

((No additional deaths or maimings. William got the kill on Xob. I do not believe Imeka suffered any lasting damage.

Summer is here so new round of pay has been posted!))

Uther will assist if the fight starts to go poorly but otherwise will tend to the protection of the city proper in case of other attacks.

Ok, Zhev was a little anticlimatic.

Before I could equip your minion (heydude, since you were first to respond) the titan wandered near the depot and was one-shot'd by a merchant guard.

But hey, let's try this again... Late summer, the bloodflies are starting to swarm. Human merchants are pulling up from the south when a shout of alarm is raised!

Orc ambush!

Right on top of the merchants!

Who will save them?

Uther moves to assist as needed, and notes that with an ambush this close to the wall (or at least a wall) maybe it was time somebody invested in an outer wall, taller and sporting slits for arches to shoot through.

Then again, maybe Uther is the only one who thinks so, it would certainly be interesting to see the less desirable citizens cast out to live outside the inner wall so the skilled workers and nobles have room to breath.

Uther and William both heard the sound of alarm being raised and immediately began making their way towards the outside where the action was. It was somewhat of a shame that the city defenses themselves were impeding their arrival. Too many peasants streaming into the fortress for them to be able to quickly leave it.

Uther hefted his axe as he crossed the bridge. In front of his an orcish thief was already rifling through the possessions of a dead merchant, his donkey lying in the sandy grass next to him with their goods strewn about. Not far from them one of the trained war lions was engaging a snaga and another orc. The pair charged, much to the surprise of the orcish invaders. Axe and sword fought side by side as the first orc fell to Uther's axe. Then Uther went after the snaga while William took on the orc. But the ambush party quickly began fleeing and no further advantages were gained. One fishmonger had died, and one merchant, the caravan dispersing.

It was bad for business and Innu called the human caravan back, promising them a hefty pouch of 1500 gold coins to compensate for their losses. (I just called another caravan, cause hey, I'm human, and can do that. I also traded with the succubi and warlocks this summer.)

Trade was good, and several of the orcish thieves and baby-snatchers were killed off when they tried to escape. But as the caravan was packing up, another event of note was shouted from the walls.

(I have never fought nor encountered one of these. I do not know how tough they are. Approach with caution.

This is a megabeast I believe. Calling for heroes, state if you wish to solo the beast!)

That was remarkably one-sided. I liked the part where you bit her in the leg, despite having a steel longsword.

Congratulations heydude, you are now the proud owner of a megabeast corpse!

(All items obtained from it's butchering will belong to Arthur)

Ok, it took me several tries, with farmer claiming the barrel before I figured out a good way to move and store it. Heydude, you now have a barrel of potion of giant strength in Arthur's room, a sky giant skull trophy on display, and a megabeast soul available to you. Let me know if you want to use them and for whom.

Because the polls are fairly evenly matched I have been working on all three. The seawall has been closed and I am in progress of making a royal suite over the ocean, complete with statuary gardens, well furnished and decorated rooms and, very probably, retractable clear glass floors. (And just hope the royals cannot swim).

Instead of continuing mineral exploration on each floor I am focusing on simply expanding the quarry deeper. We are 16 z-levels down. I have found lots of ruby at this level, and sphalerite. Lots of ruby.

In other news, I wasn't sure what to make of this:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I suspect it is something from the dwarf caravan. Not sure if it is caged or not. Guess I will unpause to find out.

Pet is caged. No risk.

New poll up
