Clean up after a battle
« on: August 22, 2014, 08:09:48 am »

I usually protect the only entrance of my fortress with weapon trap, and this time I did the same; 10 masterwork green glass serrated discs activated by a masterwork mechanism.
An elven siege arrives, and one of the elves walks into the trap. One second later, elven bits are everywhere in the entrance, and the other elves are running away in fear.

Now, anyway, I have a problem: how can I order my dwarves to clean up? I tried to build a new corpse stockpile and refuse stockpile, activate the refuse gathering from outside, but nothing works. I even tried to dump every part in a garbage zone next to the entrance; nothing works. So now, every time a dwarf tries to go outside, there is a 50:50 chance he will run away in fear and cancel the job.
Since all of this didn't work, are there any other ways to deal with the problem?

Are your traps outside? Did you activate outdoor refuse gathering?

It seems as though the job just takes a long time to activate, and that when a dwarf finally does decide to haul the corpse (or many tiny bits of assorted body parts) away, there's a good chance he'll cancel the job due to horror at seeing the bodies. Also, keep in mind if you use only one weapon trap, the trap can jam, and suddenly your ten masterwork serrated discs are useless.

Aiming is for humans.  A true dwarf just arranges for the targets to be standing in the right place at the right time.

Yes, the traps are outside. I did activate the refuse gathering outside, but nothing happened. Even after weeks, nobody even started, but at least now dwarves got used to it and don't run away as often as before (except for that DAMN woodcutter...) so it kinda helped with the discipline of the fortress. And it looks like elves from another civ will happily ignore the thing when trading in the depot 10 feet away from the traps. And at least they know what's going to happen if they keep bringing me only useless crap...

Depending on your settings the corpses might be forbidden, have you reclaimed them?
