Digging and caverns

I found a cavern.  I relocated my entry shaft to avoid the open spaces and stay within a pillar structure.  I am now mining out an area two z levels below the cavern floor.  Every time I mine further in on the current floor, I get an action notice of finding ore or minerals.  I zoom in on the spots noted and they are in the cavern...even though I'm not mining in the cavern.

Is this normal to have happen?

Did you seal the caverns without anyone getting in? A cat or something might be wandering around, discovering that stuff.

I was digging an up/down staircase.  They punched through evidently to discover it.  I kept it on pause and removed two of the three staircases.  I can't plug up the third one (at least I can't figure out how).  But it doesn't appear anyone from my party is running around down there.

Can Building destroyers kill buildings in the 'up' up direction yet?  If not, any hatch or bridge is indestructible from below.  Just put a hatch over every stair at the topmost level (or all of them if you feel paranoid) and forbid it.

This sounds like buggy behavior unless like Rafatio suggested, you have a critter or dwarf from your fort wandering around in the cavern revealing the minerals in the wall there.

When it comes to cavern breaching and stairs, hatches are a dwarve's best friend.
