Option on bedrooms : Owner may engrave
« on: August 20, 2014, 06:41:00 pm »

I think it would be pretty cool if you could allow dwarves to engrave their own bedrooms :).

Covering the walls with things they liked, or even events that are important to them or happened to their family, or even their spouse/children.

I think it would be better if your ordinary engravers would take into account room ownership instead.

It would be cool if some personality traits of stonecarvers were expressed in general, like showing more depictions of certain animals or doing a larger proportion of murals related to war or something. Maybe murals of the carver if (s)he is narcissistic.

^^The last one happens more often than you think. I had a legendary stonecarver that constantly made masterful engravings of herself making masterful engravings. Unfortunately I sort of stopped playing that fort due to death via painfully slow tantrum spiral.

You can temporarily disable Stone Detailing for everyone except the one dwarf you want to do the engraving.

I think a more interesting option would be to have a "commission" engraving system in place. That way you can get the skill of your Master engraver and have the artwork be related to the commissioners preferences. Possibly expand it into decorations and other things with detailed descriptions. Possibly allowing you to commission from a list of known historical figures or events.

Edit: I've posted a more detailed version of this idea in the forum under the name
Commissioning Artwork and Decorations

I see you there, maybe if you give the option to the Dwarf to hire it out, perhaps he is wealthy etc. does not like to engrave or has a friend with high skill, who's likes dislikes are similar to his own that he trusts  and highers for the job :).

Yeah, but then the quality would be terrible unless you make each of your 200 dwarves train to legendary stone detailers... *shudders*

A better option would be the commissions.  It'd take longer, as the stone detailer would have to stop and find the room's owner.  Then they'd have a little meeting to discuss specifics.  This could also be only used for the sake of Noble rooms/offices.  Urist McButtmonkey the Peasant wouldn't normal take up personal time of your legendary stone detailer.

This is an idea that would go very well with the economy. Wealthy dwarves end up with extra money to spend on masterful engravings which they admire and become happy.

Money does buy happiness!

Very cool, also if its possible to have our adventurer lead our fortress we could have our epic deeds memorialized...

Commissions could also take into account inter-dwarf relationships, friendships/grudges and such. Commission engravings of a dwarf the engraver hates and more likely than not you will end up with a bunch of engravings depicting the most unflattering events in that dwarf's life. An engraving of them getting their arm chopped off, one of them getting getting burned by magma, one of them vomiting. All real events, of course.

i would say have both the commissioning and the doing it yourself an unskilled dwarf may not make a poor engraving where there could have been a better one instead but i would assume that although the crappy ones wouldn't add to the actual room value much the engravers sentimental attachment to the images would cause them to see more value in it then everybody else then once the dwarf dies you can get rid of there engravings for the next dwarf. i would think for some dwarves engravings they made themselves would be the best whereas for others they would make them themselves as an engraver is not available.
