Tileset VS. Vanilla ASCII graphics?
« on: August 20, 2014, 04:13:26 pm »

I've just gotten into playing dwarf fortress and am wondering weather or not to use a tileset or just keep the original ASCII graphics. What do you guys think?

It's just figuring which tileset to use.  I tried two and didn't care for them.  Wish there was a good place with images we could compare.  I was downloading blind basically.

No, they went to Hel, where they lead a bleak existence in cold and darkness. Valhalla is reserved for valiant warriors.

Try a graphics pack. I use Phoebus. Some of them may not have been updated to work well with the new trees, so try to find screen shots of that if you can. I use Phoebus'.

The most up to date links and information is going to be in the Tilesets and Graphics forum.

I personally think graphical tilesets are very confusing. I can see what's what in one glance with ASCII, but whenever I see a graphical tileset screenshot, I just can't figure out what I see.
But yeah, it's very person specific, plus what you're used to I guess.

I got used to the ASCII look so I use that one but I kinda wish I didnt because I suspect it's worse for your eyes. On the other hand, I think it helps with imagining what's going on. The other day one of my macedwarves blindly charged a bridge with over 20 enemies and I saw it in my mind's eye as limbs and creatures flew off in every direction

I generally use tilesets but prefer CLA whenever possible, since it's still got that first-game feel but isn't quite as eye-stabbing as normal ASCII.

Whatever you like best.
Personally, I think everyone should experience ASCII. Note I never mentioned how long you need to experience it.
You'll hear a lot of people say that ASCII helps you imagine the action, rather than just see some pictures. It sounds stupid, but I consider it to actually be true, once you get used to it.

If you you want to know whats definitively best, blood will be shed. There are few things that we just don't agree on, and apparently its this. So the answer is always, "Whatever you like best."

I'm considering the CLA tileset.

My contribution to the umpteenth thread on this:

Dwarf Fortress is like a beautiful woman. No matter how you clothe her she can make your jaw drop but occasionally you should behold her in all her naked glory.

Personally, I like CLA and Obsidian. Vanilla is fine but I find the ground textures way too distracting and intrusive. Once you've learned the game, you should be able to switch between pretty much any set and still be able to read it or at least be able to pick it up after 5 or 10 minutes of playing.
