Finger Bedrooms
« on: August 20, 2014, 10:25:26 am »

I used to shy away from making the 1x2 or 1x3 finger bedrooms but now don't see myself designing anything else

Aside from asthetics, are there any thoughts on optimum strategy for bedrooms?

In the war on tantrum spirals, the difference between a "good" bedroom and a "fantastic" bedroom might be the last shred of sanity that keeps your broker from punching a child to death and precipitating FUN. Therefore I like to have extra space to deploy high-value furniture: 2x2 at a minimum, and preferably 3x2. It's not like you're going to run out of space to dig.

Mind you, you should remember that the nobility(particularly Baron and up) get mad when dwarves have very nice rooms. That is, not rooms nicer than theirs, just rooms that are too nice for their social class. I remember in older versions(not sure if it still happens) that even a Baron's children sleeping in their(the Baron's) bed would cause that.

I use 3x3 smoothed bedrooms with some furniture and a door. I've never heard nobility complain as long as their bedrooms are better. And even if they do, I'll just lock them in their room forever. Remember folks, they're only dead if you find a body...
And also, 200 dwarves happy because of awesome room > 1 noble that's unhappy / dead.

You, fortunately, don't have too many dwarves to think about but you can access the room information screen to see how good the rooms are.  Smooth all the walls, I make them 2x4, engrave every wall with a legendary+5 engraver and then put in steadily nicer and nicer furniture until they're a couple of levels below royal.  Your mayor and other members of the nobility except the king/baron/count should have one level below royal.  If the room is too valuable then you can either knock down a wall that happens to be masterwork engraved gem walls and build replacements to lower their value slightly.  This is better than skimping on the furniture which you want to be as nice as possible without being too good because happy thoughts about "owned" furniture are great whereas happy thoughts about engravings aren't so common (if they exist at all?)

Note: Unless something has changed and I missed it, digging out a masterwork engraved wall is a bad idea. That counts as a masterwork being destroyed and gives a severe negative thought to the dwarf that carved it.

For what it's worth, I appointed a noble that "rarely feels envious" and haven't seen any jealous thoughts in DF2014.

The negative thought upon destroying or losing a masterwork is dependent upon how many masterworks the dwarf has created. So the negativity can be severe or quite minor. Since engravers tend to create quite a few masterworks if you have the dwarf engraving everything in sight, destroying a few won't cause a problem.

I typically go with 1x4 (Door, coffer, cabinet, bed) for anyone that doesn't sleep in the dorms. Two of those bedrooms right next to eachother takes up the same amount of space as a 3x3 enclosed workshop + door, so they work rather well at maintaining a pattern for city-block style planning.

I like to make my bedroom hallways 1 wide but make them all up down stairways and stack em up like in a warehouse :).

(At least I give em all 2x2 engraved with bed, chest and cabinet once my labor is free)

I use 3x3 bedrooms for everyone, with smoothed walls and floor and rock furniture. Putting them in 3 by 3 blocks (with lots of doors) gives the same size as 4 5x5 rooms which I use for all my workshops.

3x3 fan here too.

1 x Bed
1 x Cabinet
1 x Coffer
1 x Door

I use 3x3 bedrooms and I never had any issues with it. Space isn't a problem, since I play with 100-120 dwarf limit.
Initially each bedroom has only 1 bed and 1 door. Later on I add a cabinet, a coffer and a statue. I make sure that these rooms aren't too valuable, so no diamond-encrusted masterwork golden statues. Nobles has even bigger and better rooms, so I've yet to see them complain. I start smoothing walls once I don't care about my wealth growing too fast.

Also, depending on my mood and material availability, I try to give my dwarfs things they prefer. This way their happiness gain from seeing things is even bigger. According to wiki, liking the material gives x2 multiplier to the happy thought value, and owning the item gives another 2x boost.  Needs some micromanagement, but it's totally worth it.

I've been using 2x3 bedrooms.  I start with just the bed, then add a restraint (usually pig tail rope).  Dwarves who are especially deserving (or especially sad) may get a statue or a chest or something.  Just not a cabinet, because cabinets encourage clothes hoarding.

A jail in every room, for house arrest! I like your style! Personally I like to jail people in the dining hall so they can chat with their friends (bonus maybe their socials skills will improve and they wont have those problems anymore :) )

All of the time it takes to make those rooms can also CAUSE tantrum spirals though by causing you to not have enough bedrooms in time, or neglecting other tasks, etc.

I'd suggest making nice-ish rooms, better than fingers, eventually, but only if/when you are really bored and it's definitely not getting in the way of more important stuff (which is most things). Over time, though, yes you should be building up nicer apartments.
