I thought of a truly impenetrable vault design:

Build an inverted pyramid at the map ceiling, the only access to which is a waterfall coming out of the bottom, which can be temporarily shut off by a lever. Use bastion blocks to prevent unauthorized people from pillaring or bridging to it. Would require a designated "vault keeper" to build a bed in it, so that when the vault needs to be accessed they commit suicide, respawn, and open it from within.

Ideally, the waterfall comes from a dispenser with a lever on it, for maximum space efficiency. This also enables the vault keeper to jump out after they do their job (though maybe they could just climb out the top. Can people stand on top of the map ceiling?)

Yes, people can stand at and above the map ceiling afaik. Also, we don't need a vaultkeeper; I designed a simple redstone system a while back that can let people up and down fairly easily and faster.

Won't bastion blocks prevent sand/gravel mechanics from working, though? I was once trapped in the ditch at Titan for days because nothing I had (including gravel) would stick.

Also, how wide is the radius of protection on bastion blocks?

  This made me think:

What's stopping someone from making a Bastion Block Cell and putting Pearled Players in it? Even if you forgot to keep the Coal Upkeep and they broke free, they'd still be stuck...

We could build a prison industry.

People pay us to keep their prisoners!

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

Won't be able to get on for at least a few days, as temporary hotspot until I get a proper ISP for my apartment is only good for browsing.

That sounds like it could actually work, but we'd need to get some good defenses up first. If people can hold the area for long enough that the coal runs out, we still lose.

That probably wouldn't work. Generally, pearls are held by the city that pearled the criminal. In addition, people would need to trust us with pearls.

The idea was for bastion block-based prisons. Which would be similarly inescapable for the inmates, but might actually be less secure from outside.

Personally, though, I don't want to paint a target on us.

Can't they just wait until they run out of hunger and starve?

You could put them in web and prevent them from moving about or jumping to deplete it. Though then again, they'd have time to break it, even if DR'd.

Whoa there! I was asking if it was possible, not suggesting we become a Penal Colony.
At most I'd suggest dropping the idea on cities nearby which do have Pearled Captives- that way there are that many less problems which may stumble across us.

A griefer by the name of tvmats paid us a visit yesterday, he put some holes into a few houses and the canal, killed the sheep, the pigs and general morul :(
The storeroom hasn't been touched and nothing is missing from my room except the fire has been extinguished from my fireplace. The farm output chest and hopper are also gone.
Could have been far worse, we really need to reinforce more.

Not yet.
I'll put 10d up, shall we build a vault for his pearl?

There's a chest full of smoothstone in the factory, we should probably start converting more of the cobble and getting to reinforcements.

Also, NOOOOOOOOOOOO!  :(
