I have no idea what a chaos server actully means, I look around.

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

Choas servers usually allow anything except hacking the server. There are non-vanilla ones, but they still allow things like griefing.

We should probably start looking for a server, then.

I'll start huntin' around after my evening classes.

It is surprisingly hard to find a vanilla server that isn't factions, prison, or hunger games that doesn't have a whitelist.

TheDarkStar also found two servers.

I'll start huntin' around after my evening classes.

I found a few vanilla-ish servers.

Tiny Vanilla - 208.115.193.201:25576
+Is fairly active
-Has absurd donation rewards
-Seems to be kinda laggy The lag seems to have cleared up The lag is intermittent
-Has a low player cap
-keepInventory is enabled, and you can teleport to spawn

MyanCraft - myancraft.mcdl.us
+Is pretty active
+Has a high player cap
-Has donation rewards (extra /homes, and the ability to keep XP), but they're not that bad
*(probably -)Has /home, and may implement MCMMO
*I have never played on this server
*Names can be coloured, which is pretty annoying

Gladius - 66.85.146.234:34240
+Doesn't seem to have donation rewards
+Decent player count
-Last I remember, it was kind of laggy, though that may have changed
-Chat is pretty terrible (subjective, but seriously)
-Has the standard set of donation rewards
*I've barely played on this server

VanillaEvolved - us.vanillaevolved.net
+No donation shop
+No dumb plugins
-Low player count
-Really low player cap (seriously, we'll probably max it out some of the time)

I generally search using this link. The website is far from perfect, but I haven't found anything better. You can uncheck SVanilla and check Vanilla if you want, but there aren't as many results.

I'll put up a poll in a day or so, once other people have a chance to contribute.

Edits are in red.

Of those three I think I'd say Gladius if it has area chat, and Myancraft if not. Maybe. Depending on what you mean by the direction it's headed in.

Gladius doesn't seem to have area chat, unfortunately.

Judging by the fact that it's picking up MCMMO (maybe), and some other stuff, I suspect Myancraft is going to become a server heavy with plugins. It's still my #1 choice due to lack of options, though.

I'd be up for this.

We'd need voice chat, of course.  Is there a mumble server we can use, or something like that?

Also, is there a general consensus for a standardised interior design?  I.e., a standard design for hallway width/height and material makeup, so that it has a set style and looks properly dworfy, or are you not planning on something like that?

We've been fine without voice chat in the past.

I don't think so? Stuff is generally pretty chaotic. Honestly, I think it's more entertaining that way.

Of course, not everyone likes chaotic architecture. Should I put up a poll?

The polls have caused this whole process to drag on for weeks.  Just go to a random one!  People will follow!

The polls have caused this whole process to drag over the full course of when I could play with some regularity.  Just go to a random one!  People will follow!
Once we're established, switching will be a pain. I'd rather spend a two weeks polling people than have everyone get tired of dealing with lag/annoying people/stupid plugins a week in and leave.

Of course, others might not agree with this philosophy. We should have a poll.

For posterity: It was 9-4-1 in favour of chaos, with one person not caring. If you only count people who explained themselves, the numbers are lower.

I think I'll start locking polls after a few days, since we seem to get most random votes fairly late.
