My dwarves flee from BADGERS.
« on: August 19, 2014, 08:12:18 pm »

I use a danger room to train my dwarves. Once they hit axe/mace/hammer lord or sword/spear master, I pop them out so they wont be too over powered. I only use this for one good squad though. The rest use live training and training months. But even my axe lords will go to clear out some animals, such as badgers, then they flee in terror. I have yet to see my axe lords slaughter a goblin, just run across the map while their war dog gets slaughtered. Why do they flee? I've been thinking of tossing in [NOFEAR] or [LIKES_TO_FIGHT] into the dwarven RAW to combat this.

They haven't been trained in discipline. Currently I think the only thing that does this is old-school tragedy training and exposure to corpses in general, and individual drills (iirc.) Throw a few dozen kittens or bunnies in the danger room with them; the sight of mangled corpses will horrify them and should build up their discipline.

normal squad training, or sending the squad out to kill wildlife, will train discipline.

Can 100% confirm normal training....I've got grand master discipline dwarves with NO combat xp.

You may also want to preferentially recruit dwarfs who are "brave in the face of danger". That does seem to make a big difference.

That said, I'm tempted to add NOFEAR as well.
