The Bay12 Island Project
« on: August 18, 2014, 08:56:28 pm »

After a lengthy derail on the sad thread, I decided it would be best to move this here.
We're discussing the acquisition of an island for the purposes of dwarven freedom, or something.

This started as half a joke and half not-a-joke, and I have no idea where it falls anymore.

Make it happen. New thread.

Maybe a city floating on the ocean?

Or Rapture?

How impractical are both of those?

Well, are we having a legit discussion of the logistics of acquiring an island?

I prefer temperate biomes. Less giant critters that way.

I support this because it is one more thing Bay 12 will have in common with Nicolas Cage.

Ptw.

And to say I'd be extremely disappointed if Bay12 didn't at least try to get an island

Uh

I have about a thousand dollars to put towards the island, or at least the required supplies. We should also make a list of what we will need.

As said before, I've got about $5000 to work with. Right now it's earmarked to pay for rent while I attend graduate school next year but this actually seems like a more worthwhile use.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

This website is what we've been using so far. You do need to be careful when looking at a prospective island, because usually the property offered is a section of the island, not the island itself.

This. I'm also bad with hot temperatures.

I say go for an arctic biome, maybe one of the islands off the coast of Antarctica. Low temperatures are inherently better than high ones due to the nature of energy, and there's penguins and blizzard men and things. Besides, I don't think some of those are claimed even.

That's a good point; we could get free cooling for computers and servers.

What's our ideal size for an island?

Ninja'd:
That island seems perfect.

Affordable too.

EDIT: This one is a nice size for the price.

I don't think we want any sandbar-type island, as rising sea levels may rapidly ruin the investment. What you want is a rocky island that juts up 10-20 meters.
