Mercenary Kings
« on: August 18, 2014, 11:53:19 am »

I originally got this game during the Summer Sale, but I tried it and went, "Not Metal Slug; Disappoint", and didn't touch until about a week ago.

I checked my game updates and I saw that it pulled out of Early Access, so I went back to it. It seems to be a cross between Monster Hunter and Metal Slug. You can craft specific gun parts and then mix and match said parts to create a weapon. Some weapons include a toilet gun, a gun that shoots homing hearts, and a gun with a gun-shooting cat. There's also a knife crafter but I don't really use them that often. Armor is a simple upgrade system, hand them the parts and money and your life bar will go up.

The game is fairly challenging. It's nowhere near as fast paced as Metal Slug, but you'll die pretty quickly if you get sloppy; but once you get the hang of enemy patterns you dodge them fairly easily.

Does anyone else play? I'm trying to figure out how to get multiplayer to work, setting it to public doesn't seem to do anything.

Woah woah woah woah woah

Metal Slug/Monster Hunter? Excuse me one moment while I...

Okay, watched the trailers, am not disappoint. It's a shame I already spent my self-imposed weekly game allowance on Game Dev Tycoon, Tropico 4, and the Fall of the Samurai sale. Next week, though. Next week this will be mine.

Played through it, its quite fun - exploit the radio call for c4/medkits every mission, its free. Many secret places can only be reached by placing a crate (with a support call) and then jumping off that!

I finished the game, but there are 2-3 missions i just couldn't do, its quite annoying.

A chain/maschinegun with all its parts generates enough recoil so that you can hover/float - useful for dem hidding spots.

Making meals is pretty much pointless, the bonus is so small.

MP is fun though

Saw an alpha preview or something like that by TotalBiscuit some time ago, looked mighty interesting. Didn't come around to gathering the funds for it yet. Hopefully one day. One complaint I remember from back then was the levels and the setting as whole looked a bit to much the same. Is there more than just jungle?

Oh they know. Spiders are not stupid. They've just got disproportionally huge balls.

Some missions will put your on the same map, but work in separate area of that map. You generally unlock a new map every rank, like Monster Hunter.

My ultimate major complaint about this game was, unlike monster hunter, most of the missions felt the same after a while. And not just because you fought a boss you fought before.

Kinda been meaning to go back to it since it was fun, but it just feels like I'm retreading the same steps no matter what since the actual mission maps are fairly static, and none of the enemies or bosses are really that interesting to fight.

So played quite a bit more and hit Major rank (Using time I should probably have spent doing story updates for my giveaway thread).

Does anyone else play? There doesn't seem to be many matches on Public, maybe I should switch servers?

I really enjoyed this game, although I hated - HATED, the first hour or so of the game (private rank.)

Here's the Steam review I wrote about it:

And here's the weapon I played through the last half-ish of the game with:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Machine gun that can fire anti-materiel rounds (wall piercing, extra large), gets 88 shots with the large magazine bionic, with some of those being double shots with the gunner bionic. All for a very reasonable 3 second reload. It was my baby.

It was actually kind of funny watching some of the Youtube videos for this game - I went a totally different direction than any of the ones I watched (the shotgunner with a 2 shot clip especially stood out.) But that's part of what makes the game so amazing - just how personalized you can make your weapon.

Never actually tried it multiplayer.

I've only played with handguns and magnums, everything else just weighs too much.
Spoiler: Current Weapon (click to show/hide)
I could swap stocks to bump ball compatibility to 100%, but I don't have access to a magnum/ball type ammo yet. Ball ammo seems kinda useless to me anyway.

I'm using the storage proficiency, so I get an additional 5 bullets.
Bionics are 2x Sprinter+.
Since my accuracy is 100%, I usually get around 3 or more crits per bullet.

My current full loadout weighs 4.9, and with sprinter mods I can essentially fly across the stage.
