I think its more the feeling of being the opposition against the 'good guys', but also having the power and personality to brush it off and tick them off. Think of it like playing the villian in an RPG. The guy everyone hates as a bad guy, but love as a character.

At the end of the day, all these characters are but constructs of texts. Figments of the player's imagination that vary with the responders interpretation. I see no reason why conflict and hostility should be avoided. Excesses are always undesirable, so whilst I do believe that characters should not alienate everyone else and earn their ire, they likewise should not be likeable to by all. I am of the belief that a character should make friends and foes in equal numbers, to show how they act not just their facades towards each.

It's not so much psychology as much as it's just characterization. If someone is just friendly or hostile with everyone, you can't really say you know who they really are, you'd only know one half of them at most, assuming that they're even being truthful.

Background: An average girl who, one day, was visited by the spirits of the Chinese Zodiac, to reveal she was the reincarnation of the Bearer of the Zodiac and gained their protection. Managing to stay out of trouble and magic shenanigans for a while, she was approached by the Academy after the Verethragna incident and brought in.
Ability: Spirits of the Zodiac: After the previous Bearer of the Zodiac died, Tohru gained the protection of the Spirits of the Zodiac. She now stores 12 high-level spells that may only be used once a day under certain conditions, similarly to Marcus' Gauntlet.
- Spirit of the Cat: A spirit attached to the bearer, acting as her advisor and occasionally assists her in battle. The only Spirit not requiring a prerequisite to invoke*. (In practice, essentially a Persona or a Stand.)
