A value is usually vector or scalar.
Vector is something like force or velocity, which has magnitude and direction
Scalar is something like mass or amount of people murdered, which only has magnitude.

Using the ball explanation again, if I threw the ball towards the north, the ball would have a velocity of 10km/h in a northerly direction.

Which of course could resultant in eldritch occurrences if say, mass suddenly became vector, or the speed of light suddenly gains a direction, or a bullet traveling in a specific direction has all it's velocity lose all concept of direction.
