Okay... His occupation (more like a very time-consuming hobby) includes being outdoors in a particular set of terrain conditions, and he took the sausage with him as a traditionally estabilished (among his fellow co-occupationers) safety measure.

Ah so he's an Eskimo tornado chaser! And he placated a roaring tornado threatening his position by 'feeding' it the sausage! As we all know, sausage is formed by voodoo meat magic such that, when thrown into the tornado, the infused centrifugal forces imbedded in the meat canceled out the spin of the deadly tornado. Thusly, sausage saved his life
