Organize/split huge plants list into categories
« on: August 16, 2014, 05:20:32 am »

Since the addition of the huge number of new plants and plant materials the stockpile management became harder.
I suggest to add more categories according to how people actually play the game.

Seeds separated into "Underground seeds" and "Aboveground seeds" to be able to setup two different farms faster and not searching for and marking 6 special plants in random places in the huge list.

Plant products can be separated in "Plants used for food/booze" and "Plants used in textile industry" (for thread and dyes). Those plants are distributed in the "huge list" even more randomly and hard to define.

Also, Quern and Millstone really has to have at least two different jobs: "Make Dyes" and "Make Flour". There are workarounds with special stockpiles and forbidding, but they don't add value to the gameplay and simply are a tedious waste of time...

While at it, maybe also split:
"Fat" and "Tallow";
Milled plants into "Dyes" and "Flour";
Animal extracts into "Milk", "Venom", "Honey", "Other?";
Gems into 4 categories by value: "Ornamental", "Semi-precious", "Precious", "Rare";
Finished goods "Types" into: Export items(Crafts), "Clothing" and Items that have function (Ropes, Chains, Splints, Crutches, Quivers, Backpacks, Flasks).

Yes, yes, yes, a thousand times Yes.

          -someone who spends countless hours organizing and micromanaging stockpiles.

p.s. also make boxes/bags separate options.

And alphabetize them! Please oh please alphabetize ALL the stockscreens!

Between better categories and more alphabetized lists, I'd save roughly half my DF playing time not hunting through menus setting up specific stockpiles!

I agree with the suggestion, but just so you know this is possible already if you alphabetise the raw files. I know for previous versions there were raws like this released on the modding board.

A thousand times yes. Especially fat - tallow are a nightmare getting worse with every creature added.

My workaround is a QSP for fat-tallow to allow to both give and take from the kitchen, but to properly set up soap industry in some distance from kitchens, this workaround doesn't really work.

Very nice suggestions.  Related: A flag for dyed vs. undyed thread or cloth.

Plant products can be separated in "Plants used for food/booze" and "Plants used in textile industry" (for thread and dyes). Those plants are distributed in the "huge list" even more randomly and hard to define.

While it would be nice, there is overlap between these categories.  Some can be brewed, some can be cooked, some can be milled into either foodstuffs or dyes, and some can be otherwise processed into foodstuffs or something else, but many plants belong into two or more of those categories.  Pig tails and rope reed, for example, can be brewed or processed into thread; valley herb can be cooked or processed into golden salve; sliver barb can be brewed or milled into dye; and quarry bushes are all sorts of weird.

Would it be confusing to have such plants listed in multiple sub-categories?  It would certainly be harder on the game than many of the other suggestions here.

I'd also be behind this idea. I'd also love the Jewler's Workshop to have "cut gem", "cut stone", "cut other" options.
