Pokemon: SandmenYou awaken with a start, in the middle of a clearing, somewhere in the woods. The full moon hangs high above you, and below you lies soft ground dotted with your scattered possessions and Pokeballs. Last you knew you were sound asleep in your own bed, but what you see, hear, feel, and smell now is far too vivid to be a dream.
A shape appears against the moon, and begins to descend in your direction. It is something between a bird and a reptile, with two forelimbs, unnaturally smooth skin, and wings made out of lunar rainbows. Something deep within your mind informs you that you are now in the presence of the Lunar Pokemon, Cresselia, Guardian of Dreams.
“Greetings, my Child.” The Legendary Pokemon begins,
“You were destined to die in your sleep tonight, but fortune smiled upon you. I am recruiting.”A silver feather, made seemingly out of moonlight is projected in front of you.
“Touch this,” Cresselia explains,
“and you will become on of my sleepless sandmen, destined to wander the earth, explore the dreams of man and Pokemon, guard against the mischief of Darkrai, further your own ambitions, and aid the legendary beings I have formed alliances with as you see fit. Remain still, and I shall return you to your bed, dreams, and fate.”How can you refuse an offer like that? You reach out, touch the feather, and are suddenly struck by a blinding flare of light! As the environment fades, Cresselia offers the following parting thought:
“I have chosen others for this role as well. It may be wise to stick together. Tough times may await…”---
You awaken once more, for the last time ever. You are at a well maintained campsite on a rocky beach, and several others are with you. Knowledge, previously unavailable to you, flows through your head and bangs against your normal thoughts; The knowledge of how to visit, protect, or exploit the dreams of others, a basic understanding of the politics of legendary pokemon, and the fact that you have seemingly been camping with these people, your fellow Sandmen, for several days on the shore of Fullmoon Island, and that a ferry will arrive shortly to transport you all back to Canalave City in Sinnoh.
What is This?Sandmen is a
Pokemon Tabletop United campaign that will be played on
maptools version 1.3.b89. It will run evening/nights Pacific Time, but the exact days on which we will play are still up in the air. It will be an open world game, and the party will be free to pursue whichever plot threads and ambitions that they see fit. The game starts in Sinnoh, but any location depicted in a main series Pokemon Game, one of the Pokemon RPGs for Gamecube, or a Pokemon Ranger game is considered cannon for this campaign, and can be visited.
The interesting thing, and main selling point, about this campaign is that the party will have the ability to enter and explore dreams, where they will have special powers and face unpredictable challenges.
Character Creation:-Trainer Level Three
-Two level 15 Pokemon. No legends or Pseudo Legends. Most single stagers are also disallowed.
-10k In Starting Funds. You may spend 1k Pokeyen during character creation only to give your starter one of its listed egg moves; You may only do this once per starter.
-Choose any two feats and/or edges as dream powers. Dream powers are only usable in the dream world. You starting dream powers may not have an Expert Ranked skill, or any other feat and/or edge that requires an Adept Rank or higher Skill, as a prerequisite. See the homebrew mechanics page for more information.
-Write a good backstory for your character, and keep an eye on the sheets of other players present. Quality of the Backstory is the major factor in deciding who I let in, and I also don’t like having characters with redundant builds.
-Include what times you are available to play on the same post as your sheet.
Homebrew Mechanics:Dreams-Sandmen are always perceptive of other’s dreams. When encountering somebody who is asleep, a Sandman may make a DC 8 Perception, Intuition, or Occult Education check to determine what that person or Pokemon is dreaming about, and if any outside forces are interfering with its dream.
-A Sandman may spend a Dream Fragment to drag all Sandmen present into the dream of a nearby sleeper. This is usually an extended action, and as such cannot be performed in battle.
-In the world of a Dream, Sandmen have access to their Dream Powers and strange things are likely to occour, but for the most part the same mechanics apply that apply in the real world. All outside items and Pokemon belonging to the Sandmen are brought into a dream with them, but all HP is reset to full when entering a dream.
-By spending a Dream Fragment, a Sandman may remove him or her self and his or her Pokemon from a dream.
-Most dreams may be ‘cleared’ by defeating the dreamer’s dream self, along with any hostile outside forces, in battle. Some dreams may have alternate and/or additional means of being cleared.
-Once cleared, a dream may be either Harvested or Purified. Purifying a dream changes it into a good dream of Cresselia’s choice, and grants each Sandman an additional 2 Dream Experience Points. Harvesting a dream grants the dreamer a night of peaceful dreamless sleep, and yeilds at least 1 Dream Fragment per Sandman.
-Once Harvested or Purified, a dream may be exited for free at any time.
-Pokemon Caught within a dream usually revert to a normal version of their species when first removed, but also have a 1/0th opprotunity of becoming a special shiny Pokemon. Pokemon Caught within a dream may start with any of their abilities, reguardless of their level, but said abilities are still chosen at random.
Dream EXP and Dream Powers-1 Dream EXP is earned for catching a Pokemon within a dream, for every 3 targets knocked out by a single trainer and his/her Pokemon within a dream, for taking two or more instability points from a single hit, and for knocking out the dreamer or a source of outside influence on the dream (other than an allied Sandman of Course). 1 Dream EXP is also earned for Purifying a dream.
-After a battle, the PCs will vote on an MVP. The MVP recieves Trainer EXP, and also recieves dream EXP if the battle takes place within a dream. The amount given depends on the significance and dificult of battle, and a bonus will also be given if the voting is unanimous.
-Dream EXP can be Spent on Dream Powers. A dream power is a Feature or Edge only avaible to a Sandman while in a dream.
-A Dream Power may be purchased when refreshing oneself with a Dream Shard. The cost of a Dream Power is 5 Dream EXP, plus 1 Dream EXP for each Feature or Edge you would have to take before normaly taking the chosen Dream Power. Example: Say you want the Nimble Movement edge, which requires Expert (Rank 5) acrobatics, as a Dream power. If your accrobatics are Untrained (Rank 2), then there would be three edges between you and your desired goal (Rank 3, Rank 4, and Rank 5 accrobatics), and therefore the Edge would cost you 8 Dream EXP.
-You can usually ignore Prerequisites when taking Dream Powers, but it is highly recomended you take a prerequisite dream power if you plan on taking another dream power that is modified or triggered by its prerequisite.
-You may spend 15 Dream EXP to turn a feature your character has already taken into a Dream Superpower, Granting it a huge buff or great modifactation of the GMs choice while you are within a dream.
-You may spend 5 Dream EXP to turn one of your Pokemon’s abilities into a Dream Superpower in the same way. You may only do this once per Pokemon.
-You may also buy your Pokemon any move, except for a legendary signature move, that you wish as a Dream Power. The cost of doing so, in Dream EXP, is always calculated as (2 + (The moves Damage Base) - (The Moves AC)). The cost in Dream EXP may never be brought below 4 by this equation. Non damaging moves are always treated as having a Damage Base of 6.
-Dream Powers that modify a Pokemon may be applied at once to any Pokemon captured within a dream. Doing so prevents you from earning a Dream EXP for catching that Pokemon.
-Dream Powers that have a Money or Material Cost may be activated when Harvesting a Dream. Doing so may cause the dream to yeild fewer Dream Fragments.
-Opportunities to earn or Create custom dream powers exist within the game…
Instability and Corruption-Darkrai is trapped within the world of dreams, and seeks to lash out at Cresselia by corrupting her Sandmen.
-While in a dream, instead of taking injuries, trainers and Pokemon instead take Instability points.
-Each time it enters a new dream, A Sandman or its Pokemon has a five percent chance of gaining a corruption for each point of Instibility he or she has. Pokemon do not count as having entered a dream until they have been removed from their Pokeball.
-A corruption is a feature or edge that either weakens the corrupted, messes with their mind, or gives them motivation to behave in an imoral manner reguarding dreams.
-When recieving a new corruption, set your Instability to 0.
Resting and Refreshing-Sandmen are incapable of dreaming, or obtaining a truly deep state of sleep, (This does not mean they are immune to the sleep status condition), Therefore they can only obtain a mechanical ‘extended rest’ by consuming dream fragments.
-By spending a single dream fragment as an extended action, a Sandman may obtain an ‘extended rest’, shaking off injuries and refreshing daily features, in a matter of minutes.
-When refreshing, a Sandman may remove a point of instability. This may only happen once per day.
-Dream powers have their frequency refreshed imeadiately upon entering a new dream.
-Pokemon can restore up to two instability points per day when healed at a Pokemon Center.
Dream Fragments-Dream Fragments are produced by people and beings who interfere with dreams. Sandmen can use them to enter dreams, exit dreams, or restore themselves.
-Dream Fragments are also valuable to other supernatural beings, and may be used as currency in many situations.
-Cressellia as entered into various agreements and alliences with other legendary Pokemon, who will arrive to provide a service if offered some of the Dream Fragments made by her sandmen.
-By offering 5 Red Dream Fragments, the Party may call an avatar of Groudon to take them anywhere that may be reached by land.
-By offering 5 Blue Dream Fragments, the Party may call an avatar of Kyogre to take them anywhere that may be reached by water.
-By offering 10 Green Dream Fragments, the Party may call an avatar of Celebi, who will remove all instability from the party, and cure one party member of one corruption.
-By offering 5 Silver Dream Fragments, the Party may call avatars of Reshiram and/or Zekrom for debate, encouragement, information on divine affairs, or advice.
-By offering 15 Gold Dream Fragments, the Party may call a nearby lesser legendary to come, challenge them, and offer the party an opportunity to catch it.
-Darkrai, his servants, corrupted sandmen, and other nasty beings may produce other sorts of dream fragments. Such fragments are usually made through particularly cruel and exploitative methods, and as such may contain great power.
