<SOLVED> How do I utilize training weapons?!
« on: August 12, 2014, 01:40:46 pm »

Hi everyone.

So I set up an area for my military (which consists of 1 person atm) to train. My soldier has a copper battleaxe, which I assigned to him. I want him to train with a training weapon. How do I go about alternating? Right now he has both, a copper axe and copper training axe. He is dual wielding them. I want him to ONLY use one at a time, so if nothing is happening he has the training axe equipped to, well, train. And if an emergency takes place he switches to his real axe. The only way I see this possible is to unassigned the copper battle axe and then reassign it when needed. This can work now, but what happens when I have 20+ soldiers?!? That would take a lot of time to keep changing Equipment of each individual soldier.

I feel like I'm missing a key feature that makes this situation simple.

PLEASE ask any questions because I can already tell the way I wrote this is going to cause confusion...

Thanks!

There's no reason to use training weapons for sparring as dwarves will spar just fine with their normal weapons. IMO, the only practical use for training weapons is in a danger room.

Oh okay. I thought dwarves would hurt themselves sparring with normal weapons. Thanks!

Still curious is there a method for alternating weapons so I'll keep this thread open for 24 hours

The only way to switch their weapons is to un-assign the one you don't want them to use.

Another use for training weapons is for live training exercises, when you don't want the prisoner to die too quickly.

You can equip fortress guards with training weapons, so they don't kill people when beating criminals.

No problem.   It's part of my standard embark now:   Embark with two copper picks, iron anvil, heaps of meat(1 unit per type in a barrel, so I Get free barrels), about 10-15 units of tetrahedrite(copper for picks, mechanisms, bins and bolts, silver for warhammers and bolts), 5-10 units of iron ore(depending on how much I can spare*), 3-5 logs, a bunch of turkeys, 4 dogs and.. BOOZE.

First thing I do is build a carpenters workshop and make some training axes to cut down trees.   Bam, instant savings, and with a decent carpenter, they get crunk out pretty quickly while my miners are digging the farms.

*Why iron?  Because it seems like every damn embark I do with shallow and deep metals results in tons of Copper, Gold, Platinum, Silver, but never iron.   So atleast this way I can bootstrap my self into some iron or steel weapons.

Look for clay on the embark finder.  You will usually get iron on clay embarks.

Not always so unfortunately.  Clay is a soil layer, and at that not different from the other types of soil - all of them have [SOIL] and appear almost in any biome except mountains and glaciers.

Iron deposits are found in sedimentary layers and sometimes igneous extrusive layers (uncommon outside volcanos).  Since sedimentary layers are generally not very close to the mountain, you do find them more in places with deeper soil.  You might want to look for flux stone layers, when looking for iron. They tend to be sedimentary, and most importantly produces steel.  Be aware however that marble is a common flux stone, which is not sedimentary.

Yeah, Clay don't mean schist.   I always look for Shallow and Deep Metals, and flux.   Sometimes you get iron, sometimes you get gold.  I'd rather have iron.

Also, a tip for new folks:   for that first year of trade, consider Spiked Wooden Balls.   They are stupid valuable, easy to transport and you can usually buy out a caravan of everything you want.

Since they sell for around 500 dorfbucks per ball, they are awesoem trade goods.  Way better than thos 10 and 30 buck crafts.

I have other use for training weapons.

Capture some goblins, then disarm and pit them in an arena. Send your soldiers armed with sticks, then look how they beat the goblins to death very slowly (And earning more xp)

That Iron-Soil/Flux tip changed my life. Just letting you guys know.
By the way, soldiers can potentially hurt themselves while sparing if they're not using a helm, or so says the wiki.

Learn how to set uniform properly. You may want to use the wiki, but I found it to be very intuitive (I had more trouble understanding the workshop's menu, actually). I usually set different ammo for training and real combat. Not sure if it's userful, though.

If you really wanted to you could assign different uniforms for training/combat, but I don't think it's gonna be userful at all  (may be userful in an arena-setting or something like that)
