WTF Artifacts to a degree
« on: August 10, 2014, 02:42:32 pm »

Well this is my first post but I thought I might as well, This post is for wtf artifacts, the sort of artifacts which include an image of a rendition of a image of bacon, post whatever wtfs you can find...
Relatively new DF, but getting the hang of FUN. But I am freaked out by some of my Dwarves they must be high or something due to 2 artifacts they have made in my current fortress;

Shislugrag Usen Kezar, "Muddledclap the Help of Rust" a pyrite cage
This is a pyrite cage. All crafsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encircled with bands of pear cut pyrites. This object is adorned with hanging rings of pyrite.
On the item is an image of Muddledclap the Help of Rust the pyrite cage in pyrite.
On the item is an image of two smooth pebbles in water buffalo leather.

Shedthum, "Ordermuscles", a alunite earing,
This is a alunite earring. All craftsdwarship is of the highest quality. I
t is encrusted with cushion alunite cabochons and rectangular granite cabochons and decorated with alpaca wool.
This object is adorned with hanging rings of granite and menaces with spikes of black zircon.
On the item is an image of Ordermuscles the alunite earring in cow leather.

When I read the descriptions my mind just went wtf, and WHY? There would be an infinite loop of each getting smaller and smaller, the first artefact of the Fortress was nothing special Amzan, "The Yawning Artifact", a apricot wood weapon rack, Decorated with apricot and encircled with bands of Apricot wood. Something nice and normal then bam mind screwy artifacts, because how the hell do you engrave the image of a cage, onto a freaking cage!!

Artifacts that have the pictures of themselves on them are quite common, nothing to worry about, that's just how dwarves roll.

Also, check out this thread.

Still it is a bit weird, infinite recursion and all that.
Still nothing like boatmurdered....
Also that thread is dead nothing new since 2011, if I post on that I would be necroposting...

Maybe it's not actually an image but rather the name of the item in a stylized calligraphy... So for example, "On the item is an image of Object_name" would literally mean, that on the item is the name of the item.

As I recall the reason for the artifacts with images of themself on it are a byproduct of the way they are generated.  The detailed description of the artifact is not finalized until you actually examin the thing.  Before you look at it just has information about materials  used in it, the creator, the time and location of creation ect but not the flavor text attached to all the decorative parts.  When you look at it the first time it generates that text.  One of the potential images that can be placed on an artifact is that of another artifact created in the past.  The mind bending bit is that when the description is generated it looks for all artifacts created in your fort, by the time it happens that specific artifact is on that list and is a potential option.

I'm sure toady could code in an exclusion to prevent this strange occurance but its honestly a low priority fix.  It does not break anything (asside from the mind of anybody that thinks about the implications of this recursion too deeply) and there are lots of other gamebreaking/crashing bugs to stomp out first.

I think it's a feature. The dwarf is inspired by divine powers for whom impossible is nothing. On the other hand, it could be an image of the object from an angle that doesn't show the image on the object.

And man you were pretty lucky with the cage and weapon rack. You can build them somewhere to add value to a room and make dwarves happy.

I've had fortresses with 20 or more artifacts where they were all either useless bone war hammers or socks or lots and lots of crafts.

So...

If I don't look at artifacts for a bit, I might find two artifacts that refer to each other?

coooool....

Not an artifact, but had some funny statue about goblin snatcher.
So my mason squad with one high level mason were building wall when my mason got stabbed by goblin snatcher luckily without major injuries just bruised fat. Then the snatcher tried to run away straight into serrated glass disk trap, holy Armok like 10 pages of combat log how he got cut to small pieces it was hilarious.
After some time I ordered chalk statues to decorate dining hall and one of them was about that goblin and said "This is exceptionally crafted chalk statue of goblin, the goblin is withering. The artwork relates to the killing of goblin by trap."
Among those there were surprisingly a lot of my militia commander who is quite badass and foundation of my fortress.

unfortunately, two artifacts won't be able to refer to eachother, because while an artifact can refer to itself, it cannot refer to things that are made after it, because it has already been made, and during the process of creation, the other artifact was not around to be made into an image. You could, however, have an artifact with an image of itself on it, and another artifact with an imagine of artifact #1 and itself on it, and another artifact with an image of artifacts #1 and #2 and itself on it...

Logisitically, the number of things that can fit on an artifact would require it to be colossal in size- especially for bugged ones like good ol' Planepacked.

I do quite like the extra mind trip that its an image of a pyrite cage on a pyrite cage, done in pyrite.

How the hell do you even see it?  Its one of those magic eye things.

I never get to see the freakin' sailboat!

Maybe it is the cage and the artist is just making a statement. A very pretentious statement.

Reading his name would trigger it. Thinking of him would trigger it. No other circumstances would trigger it- it was strictly related to the concept of Bill Clinton entering the conscious mind.

Am I the only one impressed with the ingenuity of this gem setter to expand a single gem into an entire cage?

I'm also pretty impressed with the simple, yet evocative piece artefaced by one of my metalsmiths recently.

Oh, that is truly wonderful. I hope you built it into a bedroom and assigned it to Dishmab Obeyabbey (who I hope is your baron, or something similar).

On the item is an image of two screaming creatures in amethyst. The screaming creatures are screaming.
Well, I'll be damned.

I got a whole bed carved from an alexandrite once, and a door made of peridot.
