Fortress mode bug free enough yet to start a grand fortress?
« on: August 09, 2014, 04:12:20 am »

I am so very keen to play Dwarf Fortress and start another grand fortress like i have done in the past many times, but i do not wish to be completely disheartened by playing the August 3rd version and having a game breaking bug destroy further progress or enjoyment. Is the current version bug free enough to play fully and properly yet or should i wait another couple of weeks for the game breaking issues to get ironed out if any remain.

Wait for 40.07, so you don't have to deal with dwarves breeding like rabbits. Should be out any day now.

Will 40.07 break earlier saves?

Probably not, but it is always possible it will.

I'm MUCH more interested in fixing the no siege bug.

My fortresses have been incredibly successful snooze fests with no bloodbaths.

Although my fort does look like a gore covered battlefield, but that is just from fruit stains

The breeding issues can be avoided by adjusting the baby cap, at least temporarily if you typically leave this set to default.

Are you sure? Because my child cap is 5, and my latest fortress had 29 kids.

Does the baby cap not affect migrant children wandering in?

And yes, I second the earlier poster who said the no-invasions thing was more troubling.  I'm afraid to build up a fort in 06 -- if save-games aren't broken in 07, that doesn't necessarily mean the bug will be fixed in active games (and not require a restart).

Unless something major is found, it is rare for save compat to be broken after the crash-fixing subsides.  That does not mean existing saves won't exhibit old behaviour after being moved over.

A lot of the invasion related stuff was fixed for 40.07, so we'll have to see how that turns out.

There're three population caps: the regular one, the baby/child one, and the strict one.

The .06 bug is that dwarves breed like animals.  I'm guessing this animal-dwarf-breeding bypasses the baby/child cap, because these kids aren't conceived in the regular dwarven way.  But it might not bypass the strict cap.

Yeah, my dwarves bred like bunnies until I hit the strict cap of 50, and then they stopped. So I got the population I wanted, only a lot more of them were children than I'd planned for :D
