Okay, time for something more thread relevant than discussions of normal temperature ranges, and it's a pretty interesting new development: Russian ECM targets British weapons over Syria

Quote
Former RAF AWACS commander, Air Commodore Dai Whittigham told The Sunday Express;

It entirely plausible that RAF aircraft have been targeted in this way, possibly because they wanted to see what they could do, or possibly to cause collateral damage. The problem with GPS is that the signal is very weak –it comes from a satellite in space – so it is considerably easier to hack or jam. If you interfere with the aiming system of an aircraft you have to be comfortable with the knowledge that it may cause unintended damage. We have seen that Russia doesn’t care about collateral damage in Syria.

Crews are all trained to deal with electronic interference, as these cases have shown, though, of course, the missions were still aborted. In one way, then, they were successful. But fundamentally it shows that the UK is being responsible in taking no chances that ordnance is going to be dropped in the wrong place
I was trying to think of a witty comment, but I failed, so there you have it.

I think the Russians wanted to see if they could jam the RAF's missiles, which would explain why the sorties were aborted. No missiles fired, the question remains unanswered, capabilities unknown

The Syrian Democratic Forces (Kurdish YPG/J and local Syrian Arabic militia) are taking back Raqqa (the capital of DAESH forces in Syria, apparently with an classified amount of support from NATO SOGs (per SJTF Operation Inherent Resolve). Operation is very successful so far. Meanwhile Turkish/Russian backed FSA forces fight to take back Aleppo, to much less success.

Glad the US is backing the right horse in this fight, now for Trump to show everyone he isn't Putin's lapdog by approving operations against Pro-Assad forces, and giving Syria back to its people.

Yeah, it's going to be an interesting conflict of interest between the two countries (the US and Russia that is).

Well, its nice to know that once ISIS is on the ropes, we can still continue the war in Syria.

Let's recap how hard IS is getting smashed currently:

They lost complete control of East Mosul this week and the Iraqi army is rapidly claiming ground around Mosul.
The Kurds took massive amounts of land west of Raqqa and are now preparing their assault on the Al-Tawrah Dam.
The Turkish backed rebels in Northern Syria just captured 2 towns around Al-Bab after weeks of fighting.
The Syrian army is using the forces freed from the battle of Aleppo to capture IS territory in Aleppo and recovering area's west of Palmyra.

However the situation in Deir-Ezzor remains extremely dire for the Syrian army, IS split the pocket in two. I really hope they manage to hang on.

It's probably good for tourism.

I'm not sure if border control would be convinced with Westerners flying to Syria to see the ruined Roman ruin ruins

Turkish/Russian backed FSA forces
I refuse to believe this.

I wrote this very early in the am lol. Russia's dog in this fight seems to be Assad, so I think this was just a straight mistake on my part.

lol Turkey is totally in it for the FSA tho (see: grey wolves and probably others that I can't remember). The turk lusts for Raqqa and all that.

Spoiler: poor Leo (click to show/hide)
Apparently, finest German engineering can't keep the turret where it should be. Very typical ammo detonation. I thought only Russian tanks were bad enough for that to happen, but apparently not.

Damn. They shouldn't be jack-in-the-boxing like that unless the Turks have done something really janky with their leos.

I thought leopards had blow out panels that direct most of the blast away from the tank's interior in case of an ammo detonation....
