Playable elves seem a bit... meh to me. I mean, they'd need some really out there gimmick to seperate them from the other races seeing as most of them are nicking all of the good hats;
Dwarf - Crazy bastards
Orc - noble warrior/feral savage
Kobold - earnest survivor/WE HAVE RESERVES
Warlock - tons of magic/the dead walk
Succubi - corruption
Gnomes - friends of nature/kings of automation

The insects and plump helmet men sound a lot more interesting. The insects especially; I so want my Tyranid fix.

I am actually making a playable insect race meph. I can make it and post the link later. Its based on wasps.

Ps: anyone know how to make a particular caste to fight each other when they turn adults?

I won't have much free time to help with anything until after September. I could write reactions for workshops (you showed me how to do that once) and a few other things, but that's the limit of my abilities.

But I'm bound up in time until after September 7th. I'm two days behind schedule and if I don't have this book done by September 1st my publisher is going to send someone to break my kneecaps.
Oh, I always wanted to do something like that. Maybe your publisher could hire me? :)

But yeah, if people post raws, I put them in the file for those... still have insect raws lying around that someone posted, while the idea was being discussed.

Wasps as in flying creatures? That might cause issues. And I wouldnt do any fights inside the civ, that causes loyality cascades and instakills your fort.

I have a little question, is it somehow possible to make a new "job"? I have in mind an stockpile-to-stockpile hauling job. Without it, it's impossible to haul things between stockpiles. I think its hardcoded or is it possible? ???
No. ^^

And I don't really like the idea of the PHM civ.  They occupy a perfectly fine niche as it is (which could be expanded on in its own right), and the main ideas people have for them as a civ are either hive-mind gimmicks, heavy caste-based play, or utilizing organic materials in new ways - the same things that would be used by the insects anyway.
Like I said before, its more of an easter-egg idea. I agree, fungi and insect race would be similar, and an insect race (antmen) already exists, so its easier to add to GUI and worldgen. Even if the layer-linked has to be removed for that.

Honestly, the thing i would like would be a few new pregen worlds. An idea i especially like is an all savage world. Meaning the only biomes are untamed wilds, joyous wilds, and terrifying. Is such a thing possible? I think so since mandelbrot is all calm. (probably a bug)

Another thing i would like is if it were possible to make it so that you can turn on all the fortress defense races as well as not having goblins become extinct. (at the current moment you have to choose between fortress defense or goblins)

one more thing is it possible to make it that after 15 z levels have been went through with the multi z-level view you can make it switch to the vanilla default tile rather than the black tile
The multi-z-level suggestion you have to make to mifki: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=138754.0

More worldgens with all savage is possible. And Mandelbrot is made with perfect world, all calm is intended. Balancing worldgen races... no way. vanilla DF has 4 races, MDF with FD has 30+. Things die, it happens.

I need a way of insuring that there will only ever be one hivemother in the hive.

Easy, you can have a look at the code for Overlords on Warlock mode, or any of the black/white mages in Dwarf mode. You transform a creature into hivemother with a custom workshop, and this new hivemother creature adds a syn_class to all civ-members on the map that blocks this transformation. For example the transformation has CANNOT_HAVE_SYNDROME_CLASS:BLOCKED and your hivemother has SYN_CLASS:BLOCKED that she gives to all units.

The other way is a greetings reaction that the hivemother has, that instakills any with SYN_AFFECTED_CREATURE:INSECT_RACE:HIVEMOTHER. That way you can still make several of them, but they kill each other with interactions, which doesnt count as killing anyone for the AI. It would just add a syndrome that leads to their death.

I write sci-fi/science curriculum books for young adults, so it's not out of the question. My publisher is my wife. :) She's the one with the business.

But there's a ready market for something I know you would be good at ... a geography book that covers various world regions with firsthand experience and anecdotes from what you have seen there. For instance, there's lots of children's books about Asia available, where people have put together facts they read off of wikipedia. But a children's book by someone who actually did a bike tour of Asia and can tell you firsthand what they saw and what it's like would be a high value product.

You probably make more money in your month of donations than we do on a regular basis, between her publishing business and my small efforts, but it would be a way to capitalize a little bit on what you're already doing (the travel) and once a book is written then it continues to make money for you for the rest of your life.

Ha! Well, I'm sure there's a ready market for that but I'm not sure how you go from amateur status to professional. :)

This is somewhat of a misapprehension of how players experience games. Designers can argue mechanics as much as they want with the hope of creating interesting dynamics, but players approach games from the opposite side (Aesthetics > Dynamics > Mechanics).

People might want to play elves for reasons entirely apart from having unique gameplay. Dwarf Fortress is kind of a rare game that appeals to more than two or three aesthetics. I could make an argument for fantasy, narrative, challenge, expression, and maybe even discovery and fellowship if the community around it is any indication. What that means is that different players will play the game for different reasons, and will want different things out of it. It's easy for the designer to take the logical approach and argue that something would be redundant mechanically, but players experience the game emotionally for the most part, and you can't logic away someone's emotional experience.

Maybe some of us just don't want to play hideous orcs or raisin people gnomes, etc.

That said, I think there's plenty of room for some unique 'gimmicks' as you call them. I would expand on Meph's initial suggestion of a tie in to the seelie and borrow lots from fairy lore for elves. You could even go a step further and create a dualistic race. I.e., the race is quite different in spring+summer than autumn+winter when the unseelie take over. Elves eat people, so they aren't entirely goody goody.

Ideally you would want elves to build tree top cities. Instead of farms they convince branches to take grafts of other plants. Grow wooden things from trees instead of making them. This is all just stuff I cooked up in 30 minutes, so I don't see it as a solid idea, but I wouldn't dismiss the potential for some unique gameplay out of hand.

Yes, a seasonal system with changing workshops would be planned for the elves. As does sylvan/forest elves that love nature, high-/tolkien-esque elves with mithril and bows, magic elves, pixies, fairies, seelie/unseelie, sprites, dryads... Many different ways to interpret them, just like orcs can be war-mongers, or pirates, or artisans or samurais or steppe-hordes.

That would be brutally hard to come up with. The Seelie/Unseelie courts are amazingly different than Tolkien's elves.

Orcs struck just the right balance that you could do all manner of things with them, but I think that balance will be much harder to find with elves.

The base elf would still be the vanilla DF elf. From there on it branches out. Seelie courts would probably be mostly workshops, and or pet-elves/faes.

Hrm. That's a key part (in my opinion) of how Smake achieved the pristine orc balance. Everything is done through a workshop. The base orc is a base orc, though there were several castes of them. All of the "flavor" is achieved through the workshops, and you can choose which one of them to make or not make, depending on your plans for that fort.
