Well... zerg. tyranids. thallids. Its not that unique. ;)
To give it credit though, it did come out in 1968, and was the one I read most recently of the above.

I just like the non-human races best. The standard fantasy races are mostly just parodies of individual aspects of human characteristics. You so rarely see anything truly alien to the human psyche. And when you do, it's just something to serve as the villain.

I like to see something that's radically different than a human, but yet has its own interests that don't involve destroying all of humanity.

He, in Warhammer all races are different, except that they are all warmongering lunatics.

Total conversion is hard to make for DF, because whatever I do, the civ will still need tools (axes, picks) to work, and has access to everything from farmworkshop, fishery, still, kitchen to trade depot and ballistas. I cant take this away from a race, so they cant be that different. And they have to wear clothing. ^^

Yeah. You can't really make beings of pure energy or a giant space blob. :)

But when the theme is right, for instance .. orcs ... , then the player is willing to overlook certain hardcoded game mechanics. Like when my epic orc warlord with a thousand kills to his name and sitting on his golden throne embossed with the skulls of elven invaders goes into full tantrum mode because nobody made the 3 floodgates he demanded.

Sure, but it needs to be an intelligent humanoid creature, that uses buildings and pets, requires normal food and drink. I cant make the Elementalmen from the cavern races, which eat rock and live by migrating through layer after layer. Or a hivemind of fungis... that build a distillery and brew fungi into drinks. -.-

What do big fish eat? Little fish. :)

Birds eat birds. Makes sense that an advanced race of fungi would consume little fungi.

I had them divided into castes, not particularly a hive mind. Such as the following:

Drone - hauls and does menial labors such as butchering, growing, hauling, etc.

Thinker - Does mentally challenging tasks such as brokering or making pants. :)

Warrior - Fights and fights only.Bigger and tougher than others.

Shaman - Mystical shrooms that can cast some spells and are the ones who run things. They do the transformations to turn plants from the farms into the caste warriors.

They use plant-based weaponry systems. Spore launchers, stun pods (fruit that explodes when you throw it), and that sort of thing. Melee would be fungal clubs, thorn vines (like the bladed chains orcs use), and a special type of long thorn they use as a spear.

I'm not sure how to set weapon preferences though so that a shroom warrior would prefer the fungal club over the steel battle axe they found. I think it can be done, but I'm not an expert. :)

My thoughts for these were as a "mini race'. Only a few special buildings and a handful of other things. I wasn't thinking of anything truly groundbreaking, just bits and pieces synergized from other more fully-fleshed out races.

I won't have much free time to help with anything until after September. I could write reactions for workshops (you showed me how to do that once) and a few other things, but that's the limit of my abilities.

But I'm bound up in time until after September 7th. I'm two days behind schedule and if I don't have this book done by September 1st my publisher is going to send someone to break my kneecaps.

Honestly, the thing i would like would be a few new pregen worlds. An idea i especially like is an all savage world. Meaning the only biomes are untamed wilds, joyous wilds, and terrifying. Is such a thing possible? I think so since mandelbrot is all calm. (probably a bug)

Another thing i would like is if it were possible to make it so that you can turn on all the fortress defense races as well as not having goblins become extinct. (at the current moment you have to choose between fortress defense or goblins)

one more thing is it possible to make it that after 15 z levels have been went through with the multi z-level view you can make it switch to the vanilla default tile rather than the black tile

that's all

enjoy your trip to Ireland

Lets use the ancient naval art of training war parrots. No one will realize they have been boarded by space war parrots until it is to late!
You can fake being able to run on water. You can't fake looking cool when you break your foot on a door and hit your head on the floor.

I'd say go for either insects or drow.  If nothing else, they seem like they would be the easiest to optimize once MW updates to the next DF version.

Elves need tree stuff, of course.
Goblins will be a lot more interesting if we could actually steal real historical figures and interact with real foreign communities.

So I'd say go for more community-centered races, since they won't have to change much.

And I don't really like the idea of the PHM civ.  They occupy a perfectly fine niche as it is (which could be expanded on in its own right), and the main ideas people have for them as a civ are either hive-mind gimmicks, heavy caste-based play, or utilizing organic materials in new ways - the same things that would be used by the insects anyway.

I have a little question, is it somehow possible to make a new "job"? I have in mind an stockpile-to-stockpile hauling job. Without it, it's impossible to haul things between stockpiles. I think its hardcoded or is it possible? ???
