Veteran combat skill
« on: August 06, 2014, 06:36:48 pm »

Now that training is better and faster and there's a discipline skill, perhaps there should also be a veteran skill, obtainable only in battle and which grows slowly in normal combat but gets bumps of exp with some events like:

- death of friendlies
- death of enemies
- sustaining wounds
- damaging gear
- overcoming terror
- fighting different kinds of threats
- and many more

So the idea is that a soldier will never be that great until he's seen a lot of actual combat. This skill would be greatly tied with leadership, keeping up the other soldiers' morale and the ability to survive.

Disclaimer: Apologies if this suggestion is planned, has already been made or already exists in the game in some form

I was already thinking about something like this. A dwarven veteran hero should stand out much more from the rest of the dwarves. I wouldn't increase only the skills, though. Something else should be there besides legends and engravings. Something clearly visible. Something like veterans attending parties more often. Silly example, but something similar would be great!

/edit:
I like the idea of a dwarf who's extraordinarily different and almost invincible, just because he had a lot of luck in battles at the beginning. Maybe after a while it should increase his attributes too almost exponentially. In battles the weak ones would die away apart from a few lucky ones and sort out the best of the best. Armoring should be less effective then and skill and attributes would be way more important.

/edit 2:
It would be way more tragic to lose such a real veteran dwarf too! Fun!

yeah, maybe veteran dwarves would become famous among the populace and their death would bring much grief and panic

I prefer what I see as a simpler alternative, using the mechanics already in place: Put a cap on how much military skills can be raised (maybe even discipline) outside of combat with a living creature. That way, legendary warriors could only be forged in the bloody, dangerous arena of combat, the way I feel Armok intended it to be :)

Exactly what level(s) the military skills should be capped at, outside of combat experience, are debatable.

This would also serve as an elegant fix to some of the exploits (danger room, shaft, etc) that can be used to rapidly train soldiers.

I think most of what you're suggesting is already covered by combat hardness. Which is the stuff you see in a dwarf's personality like "he doesn't care about anything anymore" which is bascially raised by exactly what you're talking about.

Its a feature. Impregnating booze is a planned tech tree for dwarves and this is a sneak peek at it.
