Carrie was upset, not in the childish, wanting to cry upset, but in the tranquil fury sort of way.  She jumped out of her body to observe her surroundings.

Your surroundings are rather unchanged - it can't have been more than half an hour, maybe an hour since you fainted. Glazzie's nowhere to be seen, and the place is deserted as you might expect. You've been left in the exact same spot you dropped as far as you're aware, maybe just flipped onto your back, but otherwise undisturbed apart from the paper left to cover your face. Looks like a note, but you're not particularly able to tell while you can't flip it over.

Kyle rapidly blinks and shakes his head a little.
Oh shit, don't do this to me. If I'm going to do bad things I should have some control over it...

You shake off the momentary weakness without much trouble, somewhat assuaging your concerns. You're not quite sure what the exact consequences of doing your thing are for the victim, but you're fairly sure they're not very good or healthy for old ladies to partake of, even if they happen to be wasting your time.

Selina looks around the room to see if Beth and Lynn are still asleep, as well as too look for a clock and confirm that she isn't stuck in that basement one more time. She also can't help but sigh in relief. She was alive, and doing a lot better at the moment.

Beth's still asleep, her back turned to you, and Lynn isn't here at all, her mattress quite undisturbed on the ground. You climb out of bed, quite refreshed, and look around for a clock - there's one on the wall here, but it shows that it's five in the morning, which you strongly suspect is incorrect, as you'd peg the level of light to be more noon-like. Walking out of the room in your search, you notice that the house is very quiet indeed, and you can actually just follow the sound of ticking to the next nearest timepiece - it happens to be in the entrance corridor, and shows that it is indeed noon - a little bit past noon, actually. You're feeling a little hungry again.

Alex would shrug.

Kibbel sighs.

"Try it, maybe?" he says. "Not on me, preferably. I'll go get the rookie. Wait here."

He runs off, and you spend the ensuing few minutes just sort of ambling around. This apartment's really more spacious than you initially thought, it seems to take up the entire top floor of an office building. And that's not even counting the rooftop terrace area. Sweet digs, all in all, if a bit lifeless at this point. No personal effects anywhere, you notice.

It's after fifteen minutes or so that Kibbel returns, a tall, well-built, dark-skinned woman in a PRT uniform following him. She looks around quite curiously, seemingly intrigued by whatever Kibbel has told her to get her here, even more so when she spots you.

"... right, so, here we are," Kibbel says, pointing her in your direction. "Church, this is John. John, this is Officer Church."

"Hello," Church says, standing still in a slightly awkward manner.

"Now, I'd like to stick around for this, but there's business to attend to, so I'll let the two of you figure things out while I get things in order. Be back in an hour, probably. Hope you have good news for me," he says, then walks off in a manner that, even to your slightly accelerated senses, feels quite rapid, leaving you and Officer Church alone in here.

"So," she says. "We're supposed to test your powers, right?"

"We don't have money, Meche. If they called you, they can't be organized...Mom'll sell anything we have to to save 'em, but most of my college money's already spent...and their's only has a couple grand right now..."

She sounds like she might cry at any moment.

"Oh... oh. I'll... try my best to get more, then, Serra. I'll... be in touch, okay, baby?"

Not awaiting a reply, she hangs up.

"Come on. I'm pretty sure if they'll be anywhere we can reach, they'll be in the shitty parts of town. Let's go assemble the troops."

For once, thank God, he didn't argue. And we set out to search. We...didn't make much progress. Asking around, we figured out a couple places they might be, but in the end it amounted to a third of the city or more.

When my phone rang and it was my boss calling to ask why I hadn't shown up for work, I nearly had a heart attack. At least they understood, though I still lost a sick day. Hopefully I'd keep it after the end of all this....but it was almost dusk, and no progress was made. A lot of the people who'd initially signed up to help needed to drop out, and I tried my best not to make them feel guilty when I said goodbye. Some stayed though. Thank God. I...

I don't know what I'll do if we can't find them.

And it scares me so Goddamn bad.

You engage the standard fisticuffs position, looking downright gentlemanly as you stand ready to sort of beat up a woman.

"Uh... what are your powers, if I may ask?" Officer Church asks as you focus on her, and as you do so, you become keenly aware of a thing you can do, a mental threshold you can cross. A switch you can pull, in a manner of speaking. You're not exactly sure what will happen if you do it. But it is certainly an option.

After a while Kyle just gets up and leaves. No sense sticking around when this will probably never get done.

You become the leader of an exodus as the other customers seem to snap one by one as you move to leave with a sigh. Leading a procession of disgruntled people out of the bank, you feel more important than usual, which isn't really saying much, as they immediately disperse afterward. You walk off without any particular goal in mind, figuring it'll come to you (failing that, you'll probably just go home), and as you walk, you suddenly notice something across the street about five blocks away from home.

It's a man, crusty and foul in appearance, sitting atop a trashcan and playing a harmonica rather melodiously, surprisingly so, in fact. Most harmonica players you've known can hardly manage being inoffensive, let alone halfway listenable. Next to him stand your dogs, howling along unpleasantly.

Selina walks into the kitchen to see if Lynn was there again... if not, she starts making some sandwiches if shes able for everyone as a bit of thanks.

You head over to the kitchen, where you do find Lynn - she's still at the table, seemingly not moved much, a filled ashtray next to her, seemingly having fallen asleep in that spot, head lolling back, her arms crossed over her chest. The place, strangely, doesn't smell like cigarette smoke, which you guess you can attribute to the open window. As you enter the kitchen, she does not stir in any way.

You jump back into your body, lifting the note above your face and reading it. It seems to be written up in highly calligraphic, feminine handwriting, and the paper is vaguely scented, you think. The information on it, well...

Dear mystery girl,

If you're reading this, I am probably already gone. Can't wait around all day for you, can I? There is much I could write about at this point, but there's only so much paper and time, so let's keep this short.

Know that you have been beaten, and beaten easily at that. And that I did it in no more than a minute with a minimum of effort, using less than ten distinct motions.

Know also that I could have doused you in lighter fluid while you were out and set you on fire, but decided to let you live out of the kindness of my heart. Next time, if there is a next time, you might not be so lucky.

So if we ever cross paths again, let your mind flash back to this day, and remember well what I have taught you in regard to your wholly worthless nature.

This day, you have obtained no clues, and the day after that is not much better, since a good proportion of the people searching the next day seem to realize the terrible futility of their task - Edwardstown, while not large by any means, is nevertheless far too daunting for a mere ten or so people to search, and by the end of day two of searching, there's just you, your mom, your sister and Jake. All others have only whatever minor comfort and not entirely sincere optimism they can afford to give - that day not even your aunt sees fit to call.

The four remaining searchers, you included, return home, quite tired and losing hope at this point for the most part. Jake is trying his best to be supportive, but you're pretty sure he's convinced most of any of you that this isn't going to work at all.

The nearest non-ruined building happens to be a warehouse from the looks of it - you approach it, prepared for some mass destruction. Jumping out of your body, then settling back in, you sprint right through the wall, and await your body to follow. What happens, though, is that you hear a rather violent crash from behind you, and briefly notice a slight indentation in the concrete wall before you are violently yanked toward where your body currently is. Your leg hurts intensely, and you think you've broken or fractured a few things from crashing into the wall. Namely, your nose, your jaw, maybe a rib, possibly your ulna.

You're not sure this is worse than yesterday evening was thus far. But the way the day is going, it is almost certainly trying to compete for the title of the worst day of your life, and possibly succeeding.

Selina walks over slowly and cheacks to see if Lynn is breathing, mostly out of a vague curiousity rather than actually checking too see if she was okay. She assumed she was, just maybe a bit drunk? She wouldn't really put it past her from what little she knew of her. If shes fine, she gets to work making breakfast.

I panted, trying to calm down. Jake made breakfast again, and the search went on again. Olive had to go to work around noon. Mom, trying her best not to cry, stopped around four-o-clock, saying something about needing to make arrangements. Only me and Jake kept searching, and after the sun started to hit the tops of the buildings, at seven or so, he gave up too. Said he needed to help other clients, people he could help.

I kept looking. I would not stop until I found them...or their corpses...

It was getting dark, and I was in one of the poorer sections of town, when it finally paid off.

After about fifteen minutes of solid crying and screaming, you are mildly relieved to note that it doesn't hurt quite as much anymore. On the negative side, nobody seems to care as you lie there and scream. That is, until a tall, extremely skinny hobo best described as meth-eaten comes over, looking over you with a curious expression.

"You okay, little girl?" he asks, scratching his head. He doesn't sound like he's spoken for a while.

Selina walks over slowly and cheacks to see if Lynn is breathing, mostly out of a vague curiousity rather than actually checking too see if she was okay. She assumed she was, just maybe a bit drunk? She wouldn't really put it past her from what little she knew of her. If shes fine, she gets to work making breakfast.

Lynn's still breathing, and slowly enough that you're pretty sure she's just asleep. It happens sometimes, you guess, falling asleep like that. After all, five or six AM is not the best time for rational decisions.

In any case, you make some breakfast - there's just enough stuff in the fridge to make a bunch of sandwiches - and in the process, notice a peculiar thing. Your hands feel vaguely oily, and though you seem to leave no residue on anything, there's still the feeling that you are slightly unclean all over, and your grip is slightly more slippery than you'd feel comfortable with.

"Excuse me, who are you?"

He stops playing, at which point your dogs notice you and run over to you, brushing up against you in a friendly manner. The man raises one of his very thin eyebrows, his eyes bloodshot and his mouth a little collapsed from lack of teeth.

"Bo," he says. "Who are you?"

It is a poor section indeed that you find yourself in, the projects area. You've been here before two days ago, and you are in transit this time around, when you see something very intriguing.

It's your aunt, you're fairly sure, a skeletal, leathery woman with matted hair, smoking while sitting on a curb, her eyes wide. The years have not been kind to her, obviously. As you approach, she looks at you offhandedly, but doesn't appear to recognize you, judging by the mistrust in her eyes. You draw a bit closer, and this seems to set her off, as she immediately bolts upright.

"What? What the fuck do you want? You got a problem?" she asks harshly. She might be on something, you think. Got a mildly wired look to her.

"Don't worry. I can just be close to you and teleport away. I won't hurt you, I'm just going to demonstrate"

"Okay," she says, and you focus on her further, and suddenly the two of you, at the same distance you were before, find yourselves on the gray wasteland, featureless as ever. Officer Church jumps a little at the sudden transition.

"Oh! What just happened there?" she wonders.
