Jake Campbell:

You are having dinner with your mother and your little brother, as mentioned previously. The food, you find, is rather good. Your mother speaks emptily as usual, making noise to make the table less silent, and you and your brother serve as a sort of echo chamber for her in the meantime. The weather outside is quite gloomy - soon after you got home, it started raining, which you guess is a lucky dodge for you. The dinner proceeds at a leisurely pace, though it keeps getting darker outside, up to the point where it might as well be pitch black. None of this you notice immediately. Rather, it is what happens next that catches your attention. The room is bathed in a white light, and a sound not unlike that of an artillery barrage booms through the room. You nearly fall out of your chair, your mother really does fall out of her chair, and your brother shrieks with surprise.

If you're not mistaken, you believe that may have just been a lightning strike. The charred, glowing red pieces of tree floating on outside the window seem to confirm this. Your brother's treehouse seems to be toast in every sense of the word.

Alex Raman:

Your dad's running for the Senate. Your mother's in the city council. Most people in your position would strive to be good examples - indeed, you possess almost infinite potential to make asses of both of your parents. Most other politician kids join sports teams, attend debate clubs, excel in class, do that sort of thing. But you were never one to bow to such pressure. No, what you did instead was start mugging people and joined a street gang.

When somebody calls you a dumbass for becoming what they term 'street trash' when you had all the options in the world, you turn it right around on them, saying you're 'not smart, but clever', which normally gets a roll of the eyes. And a certain Mrs. Black (or Mrs. Curie, or Mrs. Meitner, or whatever she's calling herself today) made quite the mistake when she underestimated you. With just a little bit of detective work, you have discovered where she lives, and from there following her has been easy - this time, she seems to be conducting some sort of deal in one of the abandoned factories outside of town with a few minor players from up north. You and your crew are standing by, ready to jump on these shitheads, shoot them dead, then get out with the money and the product. So now, you guess, it's time to strike. You turn to look at your friends. This is your chance to hit it big, you think. This is the one that'll put you in the upper bracket.

Carrie Black:

Your mother's still being weird over there in the room, talking something over with the other strange men as mentioned. You have no idea what's happening, but you get a slightly bad feeling as her voice becomes a bit harsher, not like when she's telling you not to do something, but more of a cold harshness.

Kevin Schmidt:

When it comes to confirming that the human race is doomed, you're kind of a glutton for punishment. People suck, after all, and nobody really seems to get this. You've told people, and they just shrug, deny it or worse, agree and laugh, like it's all that funny or anything. And all the while the world's coming apart around them. Fucking people, what's their malfunction? Are they even human anymore? You certainly don't feel like it. Animals, the whole damn lot.

It is with this pessimistic mindset that you've sat down in front of your computer this fine evening after an exhausting day, a special set of footage ready for the watching right in front of you. Putting on your headphones, you check it out. Newfoundland, 2005. Just last year. You've heard the news, everyone has. But you've never seen the footage. You don't really watch the news much, since you lost your general ability to give a shit a couple of years previously. This is apparently some kind of compilation, edited together from several sources.

Serra Navarro:

It takes a village to raise a child properly, and your family's certainly not the exception to this rule, with you, your older sister and your mother being equally hard at work at virtually all times to keep your two younger brothers in as healthy a developmental place mentally and physically as possible. Not an easy task, given your resources, but you're not exactly the consummate overachiever you are due to your avoidance of difficult tasks. Fortunately, you seem to be handling it in almost a textbook fashion. Like today, for instance. Today is a day that you have fewer responsibilities both college-wise and job-wise, so it's you who gets to pick up the kids from school. It is a comfortable routine by now.

You approach the school and find that they're not outside yet. You guess that's not unusual. Maybe they got janitorial duty again. You step into the lobby, where that friendly front desk lady you never quite learned the name of greets you.

Alex would smile as he waited. This woman had fucked up, and he was going to enjoy killing her. He would stare at his knife in anticipation. He held up his shining watch to his face. He whispered and and muttered to himself. "Hope they show up on time. The less time I have to wait to Fuck them up."

"Damn, was that lightning? That was really close. And it got dark too. I didn't know there was supposed to be a storm today." Jake remarked, looking out the window at the pitch black darkness and red embers of what used to be a tree.

"Jake, watch your language in front of your brother!" His mother reprimanded before leading everyone to the living room, turning the TV on, and flipping to the news channel to see if there was any info on the storm.

"Is my tree house okay?" His younger brother asked as he plopped down on the couch.

"I think that lightning got it, but Dad and I will build you another one, Nick." Jake responded as he sat on the couch next to Nick.

Well. I've got literally nothing better to do.

Wondering why you even happen to be considering such a thing, you forgo the popcorn and just sit down and watch. After all, even you would feel a little dirty in the soul if you were idly eating snacks and making self-satisfied munching noises while watching half a million people die. You'd be one of those fat people from movies who run tyrannical governments or crime syndicates. The ones who get fed to sharks, or maybe pigs as an ironic punishment.

But enough soliloquizing! You begin to watch, and it starts out kind of like your average found footage flick, which you'd be a lot more familiar with were this not 2006. As it is, it feels semi-novel, in a way. Your first time watching an Endbringer attack. The panic is palpable among certain parahumans featured in the footage, to say nothing of the people of Newfoundland. It's all very basic stuff, though you do admit getting a bit excited from all this buildup. Who wouldn't, after all. The foregone conclusion, though, that you wish you really didn't have. It just makes the optimism of some of the people featured kind of sad.

And then comes the main event. It goes like you would expect - Leviathan shows up, battle ensues. Lots of shaking cameras and fast movements, and you don't see much of what happens - just that the number of sources seems to decrease over time. Rapidly, in fact. There's floods, destruction, an Endbringer, massive casualties. You can't help but feel slightly apathetic as people keep dying, because there's just so many, as the video kindly points out. But then the thing you've heard about happens, and this is where the video shines, because the footage gained has the perfect view. You're not sure how. Maybe a parahuman cameraman or something. Maybe just someone really dedicated. But you don't care at the moment, because what you see right there and then is the breaking of the entire island, the whole place beginning to quake, buildings falling apart, the island itself disintegrating around the observers, sinking into the sea. It's not a spectacular sight, as disasters in life never are, but the reality of it, shown through several viewpoints, of half a million dead and a whole island wiped out of existence, pretty much, it all hits you right there. The world falls apart. Everything dies and returns to dust. Nothing at all matters. And there is nothing, absolutely nothing you or anyone else can do. You, like almost everyone in this video has already, are going to die. You've never really thought of that before.

The idea strikes you as a little interesting. You lean back in your chair, letting the video run. Right now you feel as light as the planet you stand on, falling perpetually, circling round and round, waiting until the end of your time. You avert your eyes from the end of the video, a timeskip to present day, and gaze at the ceiling, slightly wistful. You begin to idly daydream about death, possibilities, the purpose of meaning, what is the meaning of the term 'purpose of meaning', and this leads you down a labyrinth of sorts. Meanings, purposes, thoughts, the mindbending nature of epistemology. Your place in the vast, unfriendly darkness of infinite multiverses. The place of others. Extraterrestrial life. Universal rules. Massive beings wandering the cosmos, arched hulks of repeating patterns extending across many permutations of the same basic universe. Adaptation. The meaning of life, and the nature of fate. Grand machines of arms and mirrors, mastery of fate. Problems you can solve and situations you can mold, given the materials and the will, as you have the way. And the time. Some time, you guess.

You realize that you have been lost in thought for some time now all of a sudden. At least an hour. It's been three or so hours since you started the video, and the video's been over for a long time now, leaving just a dark screen in front of you, the interface of the embedded player poking out as you accidentally bump into the table.

Alex would smile as he waited. This woman had fucked up, and he was going to enjoy killing her. He would stare at his knife in anticipation. He held up his shining watch to his face. He whispered and and muttered to himself. "Hope they show up on time. The less time I have to wait to Fuck them up."

You could go in there guns blazing right now. You're not sure what's happening, exactly. There might be some sort of handoff happening. Or maybe even a standoff. Maybe you could go in there and fire off a couple of shots, then they'd shoot each other. Wouldn't that be dramatic!

Just as you reassure your brother, another flash occurs, followed by yet another incredible boom, and after that there is darkness - you think the lights have gone out. Another flash and a boom, then, seconds later, the sound of something breaking in the next room. The panic in the room is increasing.

"Hello! Miss, ummm..." Damnit, what was her name, again? I still couldn't remember it, after all this time. I was almost embarrassed, but worry about my brothers pushed the thoughts to one side.

"Hanstead."

"Hanstead! Sorry for bothering you, but do you happen to know where Dominic and Lucian Navarro are? I'm picking them up today, but they weren't outside..."

"Of course; if you'll fill out the visitor form while I find out?"

"Thanks."

She typed on the computer quickly before calling a number, presumably someone in the building, as I began writing my information on the form. It was more than a little silly to need a visitor form for picking up kids, but with the neighborhood being what it was, I could understand.

"Power outage? Dang, this is a really bad storm. I'll go check it out, you two stay here." Jason states, getting up and feeling around the room to find the flashlight on the shelf. He turns it on, shining it on his mother and brother to make sure they are okay before making his way to the next room to see what happened.

Carrie climbed up a group of boxes and went in an open window. She snuck around in the warehouse until her mother's voice was clear.

"I know you lot don't exactly like the idea of more parahumans coming into town, but it is inevitable at this point.  I at the very least am getting on the ground floor of this new tinker's business."

Carrie wondered at that. Edwardston didn't have much in the way of tinkers. Her mother's big friend opened the briefcase and showed it to the onlooking men.

"These are syringes containing Flask's newest batch. He gave us these to for free to test the market here."  A couple of the men looked very intersted and Carrie gasped in spite of her self.  Flask was an out of town villain known for chemical poisons.  Her mother... Her mother was dealing with supervillains? What was happening here?  Carrie's brain seemed to slow down, as if trying to avoid making the connection. She couldn't be... She wasn't... Her mother would never... She began to sneak away.

"Damn... I need to stop thinking."
Shut down the stuff and go to bed. It's presumably to late for this shit.

You shut down the computer and go to bed. After all, you may or may not have a day job of some sort to take care of.

At some point, you pass out, and then begin to dream in an atypical manner. It starts out as dreams tend to, with a peculiar mixing of familiar circumstances, where you pass from one familiar place to another in a perplexing manner, people from your life and outside of it mixing together. This time it's something murder-related, but the fact is, it begins to make less and less sense as the dream goes on, and you almost reach that particular part of dreaming where you go off and do something unrelated or wake up and leave a great deal unresolved, but then it happens.

Lucidity. You realize you're dreaming. That's never happened before, you think. At least not that you remember. Currently you seem to have been mistaken for a serial killer, and the cops are after you. But you get the feeling that's not too important right now. After all, your dream is now your personal playground. A whole world of imagination at your feet.

As you fill out the visitor's form, Miss Hanstead seems to be subjected to a lot of waiting. This unnerves you slightly. It is a sizable school, one of the few in this district, but still. Finally she seems to get an answer, and the face she makes as she receives it is slightly unnerving, even though she keeps it up for only a fraction of a second before returning to a more composed look. She looks at you.

"Um, well, they're not still in class. Apparently, they were let go a little early today," she says. "Hm. Could you maybe describe them to me? Maybe I've seen them?"

Would raise his hand in a fist "let's move" he would draw his knife, before moving forward at the head of the group of thugs.

And with that, you move with knife in hand, as is your general style. You also have a gun, of course, but knives have a much more intimidating look to them that you appreciate. And thus you and your mates stylishly drop in on the deal, and almost immediately, much to your chagrin, a roughly equal exchange of fire begins, and even though you have the element of surprise, things, you feel, have gone tits-up already - first of all, you're a bit slow on the draw, and you completely manage to miss Mrs. Black, though your mates get a bunch of her friends and the other people there. Second of all, most of your buddies get a very good taste of lead, and the closest thing you have had to a best friend lately, Tom, gets blasted in the head the minute the action starts. You're grazed a few times, several of your buddies are very, very dead, and you've only managed to get about half of the people here, and they, you can tell, are pretty goddamn pissed. They also seem a bit better at this than your guys, and appear to have you pinned down.

"Power outage? Dang, this is a really bad storm. I'll go check it out, you two stay here." Jason states, getting up and feeling around the room to find the flashlight on the shelf. He turns it on, shining it on his mother and brother to make sure they are okay before making his way to the next room to see what happened.

With your flashlight, you check that your mom and brother are okay, and when that proves to be the case (although Nick's pretty excited now), you go into the next room, noticing that one of the flower vases you got there seems to have broken. It looks a bit out of place for a moment, and you can't quite place why exactly, but then you realize that it seems to have broken right across the room from where you remember it being placed.

And if that wasn't enough, there's another crash from the room you just left - heavier this time, sounds like a chair - both your mom and Nick seem to have been greatly startled by it. You look over at the door, and then something crashes right behind you - the couch of the living room you're currently in. It seems to have smashed right into the ceiling!

Before you can begin piecing together the already increasingly obvious facts, a group of men bust right in through the door, and from there it's complete pandemonium. You discover that your mother carries a concealed gun, first of all. And you see firsthand what a gunfight looks like, and what it sounds like, and exactly how loud an actual gunshot is in person, which is to say painfully so. You almost instinctively drop to the ground as the barrage of handgun and shotgun discharge happens all around. You're almost too afraid to look at what's happening.

Steven Jerle:

You're a bit drunk, and it's a bit late. The streets of Edwardstown have never been particularly unsafe for people to walk at night, at least not in comparison with the national average, so you saw no real problem in just walking home. It seemed like a pretty good way to save money (especially since you had little of it on you, certainly not enough for a cab), get some exercise and fresh air, maybe even take in some sights. But as safe as it generally is, even Edwardstown has its bad side, and you, in your infinite genius, have decided that tonight's the night you will try it as an ingenious shortcut home.

Little did you know, of course, that when you're drunk at night in the bad side of town, it seems like virtually everyone you see on the street has some kind of malignant agenda. Especially small groups of people chatting amongst themselves in an alley. One such group you happen to pass, and they definitely notice you, looking at you every few moments, their conversation becoming a tad surreptitious, with some laughter mixed in.

Carrie hears her mother call to ber men to cease fire. "Allright dumbasses, throw down your weapons and we can have a nice little talk.  I'm not one for senseless killing but you had best hurry or my itchy trigger finger is going to get scratched."

Mrs. Black quipped snidely to Uncle James, "God, I hate uninvited guests."
"Be careful Catherine. We should probably just put these men down."
"And lose out on some new resources? No thank you."
