Suddenly king - what next?
« on: August 05, 2014, 03:02:51 pm »

One of my dwarves has crowned himself king (don't know where he got the crown from). I gather that means the home civilization is dead?
Is that the end of dwarven caravans?
Is there actually any advantage to having a king near the start, or is it all overhead and no perks? :P

It just means the king is dead. The civ might still be alive.
The caravans will come no matter what.
There's not really any advantage to having a king ever except bragging rights. Have fun not being able to request stuff from the traders.

That's handy. I never really used the 'order specific stuff' feature much.

Make sure to have a room built for him soon, especially if you are an early fort. Maximum sized rooms, in a smoothed flux layer (or other high value stone) with decent quality furniture can be considered royal pretty quickly, and even if the king's rooms aren't royal quality, the happiness modifiers from seeing all his cool stuff compared to everyone else living in the dirt will keep him quite happy for a long time.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That is my current king's quarters, and he is hovering in the "quite content" territory. Grand/opulent rooms, nothing fancy yet.

You may find this

helpful for making his rooms.

And I encourage you to use the order specific stuff thing in later fortresses. I find it really useful for the metal industry.

I accidentally started as a dead civilization. A random dwarf became queen on 1 Granite of my second year, and that fall, I got a liaison. Actually, I didn't get a liaison the first year, because it wasn't until the start of the second year that the game checked for and filled all the empty positions in the dead civlization.

Hydrodynamics Education - read this before being confused about fluid behaviors

The wiki is notoriously inaccurate on subjects at the cutting edge, frequently reflecting passing memes, folklore, or the word on the street instead of true dwarven science.

Interesting. Having a king is not the same as being a mountainhome I guess.
