Problem with Adventure Mode
« on: August 05, 2014, 01:39:45 pm »

I have not played DF so much, and only Adventure Mode (with a graphic pack for easy understand). When I inquire about any trouble, they say,for example, "...We have beasts, bandits and criminals",so I  ask for the bandits and criminals. After sleep, drink and eat,I go to the camp and kill them with stabs of my sword of arrows, then I steal the best things (like armor, swords, bows, arrows, gold, etc) and come back. The thing what I didn't understand is why the people say "It is inevitable" or something like this, and my allies says "The death is all around us...","There is no need to be vengeful",etc, when I kill the bandits/criminals or I say what I have done. The enemies what I attack didn't defend themselves (wrestlers, crossbowmans and swordmans) because I start the fight in sneak mode with a Stab in the leg and kill them with a stab in the neck. One time I sneak to kill a Warlord and he turns back and talks with me,then I steal the things and come back to the city.I come to ask why he doesn't attack me,and if the things what I'm doing are wrong. My english is not the best, because I speak spanish.

Yeah, the newest update basically completely changed how people behave, so people are a bit broken right now.

It's a reverse hostage situation, if you kill the snatchers they'll fill your fort with babies.

Yeah just kill the bandits anyway. Ignore your allies' wimpiness and the quest giver's lack of caring.

Ah,and why the lasher in my group runs away after any trouble? She runs away and I must wait for her...
What are the asterisk in my fast travel map? Sometimes they follow me and another times they just go in any direction.
Just one enemy attacks me in a ambush,a crossbowman what runs away...After that,he ambushes me again, shoot at my teammate and runs away, the last two men (me and another spearman) follow him,and then he shoots the spearman two times,I take cover and wait, the spearman says "Please!Help me!",but the crossbowman shoots him in the head and in the leg,so I believe what he's dead,I retreat (the other spearman wasn't dead,so we run).I run and fast travel again and go to the city more closer, but a asterisk follow me,I stop and it's the spearman.I don't know if the asterisk is a enemy,ally,animal,etc,etc...

If you're looking to play adventure mode seriously, stick to old version instead of 2014. there is a lot that needs to be fixed that currently makes 2014 a worser experience as with your examples.

The asterisks on the travel screen are other people who are travelling to different places. Your companions will be one - they will follow you - and you'll sometimes see bandits scouting around and soldiers from a town wandering about.

On the main Dwarf Fortress page should be a link saying "Older downloads". Click it and find version 0.34.11.

If you want to start another character, take your current one to a town or village or whatever, press escape, and select "retire". If you can't get to a settlement, "escape" -> "give in to starvation" works too.
Don't be concerned about giving up and starting again in any Dwarf Fortress game. There are no victory conditions or points you have to accumulate. Just do whatever makes it fun for you.

The liquids (water, magma) displaying as sevens is not a bug. It's a design choice to let you see how deep that pool of liquid is, anywhere from 1 to 7.

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

From my experience, you only see your companions as an asterisk if they were somehow separated from you, say you crossed a river and left them behind, or took a shortcut across the ocean.

Sigtext. Enticing, yes? If you do not know where things I have "sigged" go, this page will explain.

Oh, okay. I hadn't really noticed that. Good to know, though.

About the water seen as numbers instead of the corresponding tile, in DFdirectory\data\init\  open the file named d_init.txt

Scroll down until you see
[SHOW_FLOW_AMOUNTS:YES]
and change it to
[SHOW_FLOW_AMOUNTS:NO]

this will bring back the water tile instead of the number

The asterisks on the travel screen are other people who are travelling to different places. Your companions will be one - they will follow you - and you'll sometimes see bandits scouting around and soldiers from a town wandering about.
If you fast-traveled with your companions on-screen (unless they are injured or slowed somehow) they will typically merge with your map icon (sometimes you must ask them to follow you), but if they are injured or you cross a river and then fast-travel before they get to the other side, they will often break off from you and attempt to follow until they can reach your tile again. Sometimes they become more disconnected though and choose to go off and do their own thing for awhile, but I think remain in your party, just aren't listed until you can see them again. I once was rapidly recruiting night creatures, and watching them duke it out with eachother because they are apparently not fond of anything including other types of night creatures. I thought the last one had died off, went off and cleared a bandit camp, came back the way I had come before with a goblin in my party. This is several days later, aforementioned night creature appears on screen the next time I leave fast travel, and he very violently gores my new friend in the head. Jealousy, perhaps. Apparently he had broken legs, though, and this separated him from me for a long period of time.
