Strange mood items in .40.05+?
« on: August 05, 2014, 09:27:56 am »

For the first time last night, I had a strange mood kid who wanted items I had in abundance, but he wouldn't take them.  He was withdrawn, drew pictures of bones and cut gems.

He immediately ran to the bone pile and got the bones... then ignored the four types of cut gems I had sitting around until he failed, went berserk and tantrum-spiraled my fort to death.  Thanks, booze-sponge.  There were more bones available as well, so he had everything he wanted.

Any guidance on why this happens, and even more useful, how to avoid it in the future?

I'm new to succession forts in general, yes, but do all forts designed by multiple overseers inevitably degenerate into a body-filled labyrinth of chaos and despair like this? Or is this just a Battlefailed thing?

There isn't much middle ground between killed-by-dragon and never-seen-by-dragon.

He wanted specific types of things based on his item preferences. Best advice I can give you is to use caravans to get one or two of every type of metal bar, gem, leather, and such.

Unless you have spectacular trade partners you will probably lose the occasional dwarf to moods no matter what. Mass happy thoughts for your fortress and chalk it up as a cost of doing business (or turn moods off).

Strange moods are a little buggy still. I keep having burrowed or locked-in dwarves teleport around to get to workshops, or take a minute or two to realize there's a metalsmith forge already.

Maybe he wanted cut glass?

if you can't get the things he want, wall off the workshop so he can't kill anyone while berserk.

He probably wanted more bones.  At least, if this were 0.34, and he hadn't taken 3 stacks of bones yet, I'd feel extremely confident with my answer.  It's possible something changed in 0.40 that I'm not aware of yet.
