Sorry for the random topic, but it is fairly on the topic.

How does the game decide how many animals can be on the map at a time? does a bigger embark mean more animals?

Typically it's one type of animal at a time, depending on the biome.

I have seen, although rarely, two types of animals (like Camels and vultures) at the same time, in a dual biome embark.

so a bigger embark that spans more biomes may be likely to have more types of animals is what it sounds like.  You can still do smaller embarks, but look for ones that span different biomes.  Atleast that is what it sounds like to me.
