Are you sure you want to walk away from an enemy within reach like that? It gives it an AoO.

Our average bonus to hit is 2, so our net chance to hit is around 40%. Makes for frequent missing

Action points are basically ways to help avoid the complete randomness of rolls. Fail your save against Finger of Death? Don't worry, use your action point.
Need to hit that BBEG before he kills you with Time Stop? Use your action point.
You can also use an action point to recall spells if you're a wizard, play defensively, and use an action point to make yourself stable. But you only get 5 at 1st level and you can't regenerate them, so use them wisely.
