Kind of both. The king could have lived or died, but the plot will shift in another direction because he died.
Being a lvl. 2 aristocrat, he had 16 hp (2d8 hitdie, maxed). First attack did 8 damage and the second attack did over 8 damage.

So it did 18 damage? Again, the reason I ask is because if he follows the rule of "-10 is dead" then for any logical hit damage he'd just be dying. If that's the case I can save him. If it's a cut scene death then I don't care because the king was a moron and thus I shall do something else entirely.
